14 THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL, PORTLAND. , WEDNESDAY EVENING. OCTOBER 21. 1008. WORLD'S MARKETS nini HniXLl nin uniuivLii ii PLACED UPWARD Demand Is Ksiecially Good jorrai jifiis iH.si at 13 l-2c round. TortUnd wholsale markets: chickens are advanced. Fill quoted firmer. Yeal la not quit ao firm. Treed hoga Just easy. tmm rntito market holding tiff. Kfforta to depress onions fsl. Pinall amount of hop trading. 'Sweet potaloe In fine shape. Jlothoua lettuce market drugging. Itasor clams ara vary scarce, t'asabas find a good sale. Cheese market la firmer. Chickeaa Arc Aavaaoed. The demand for chlrkena Is very good at this time In tha Front street mar keta. Arrlvala are Just about short of tha demand Juat now aa they were greater than tha traded requirements a . short time ago. The reason ror it i that ahlppera alwaye send supplies when they are wanted laat. but when there I. t rood demand It la' Inval Inbly the rule for ahlppera to hold bark their sup- piles. Along the Front at reel markets today the demand la beat for 1ieavy hena but of this variety few coops are coming. The trade In general I of the .ninin. that tha call will be good for select atuff around IS He a pound ami about 13o for mixed lots. Of late the arrlvala have consisted mostly of fryers B'(1 broilers and In consequence there Is not so much demand for these aa for fancy hen. Ej-fi Are Quoting Plnmr. There la a firmer tone In the egg market with more sales at 40o, although , not half of the arrivals are moving be 1 rond SJ'ae a doxen for local ranch. Ar rivals of fresh stock are very Riant, Din even then aome of tho larger buyers refuse to pav more than JJc e yond that pike they say that the range between local and eastern stock la too great;the latter being or exceptionally good quality and few oitn tell the dif ference. In fact, only an expert would be able to distinguish between the two. ! Cbaese Market Is rinner. Values in tho local cheese market are disposed to show considerable firmness at this time. At Tillamook t,he market Is verv good ana steaay wun h ut-111n.uu fullv iip to the output at current values. Along Front street sales of flats are still being mad ot 14Srl5c, although more are asking the higher price than formerly. I . ., dmi! morlAi Is holrtine firm with no "change In the situation for the past few days. According to local makers, the increase in the output is very light as yet. Baxor Clams Are Very Boarce. There is a great scarcity of razor clams in the Front street market at ' this- time. The storms off the coast have kept diggers from the beach. The shortage In salmon yesterday was caused hv the failure of the fishermen to connect with the steamersr Today supplies were quite liberal again. Potato Market Ii Stiff, While there may be a large crop of potatoes along the rivers or i.aniornia. ' this fact is not affecting the local mar ket to any extent. While there Is prac- . tieally no shipping demand Just now for Oregon potatoes, growers are not pres sing their supplies oh the market in fact many of them are unwilling to sell 'except at materially advanced figures. Efforts to depress the local onion market by bringing in shipments from California have failed and the trade here ennl.4 acarrAlv h ateadter without d- I iniln rnlniaa it pnnill'h local Rlni'l: j Ja coming to supply the trade. Another fine car of sweet potatoes ar rived from California this morning and found a good demand. Brief Notes of Pront Street. Demand for hothouse lettuce is ralher glow and prices are dragging again. Cabbage market is easier but values are holding. Casabas are moving freely around former figures. Arrivals of apples from the Hood Itlver show are liberal and demand is good. Prices range as high as S3 a box, Dressed hogs are rather slow in mov ing and the tone of the dressed veal: market is not nearly so good as last week. Front street sells at the following prices.' The trade is Inclined to the opinion that select quality will bring the higher figure for awhile, but with eastern prices again depressed It is not known how long loco! prices can remain In check.
