By exporting 1,711.576 bushels of - wbaat Portland took third position In point of prominence aa a wheat shipping port lit tha United States during tha month of September, according; to fig ures compiled by the department of com mere and labor. Galveston lead, with New York second, Portland being verv close third. Following ara tha figures showing- the shipments of the six leading ports: Gal veston, 2,943.1(4 buahels; New York, 1,7M.I05 bushels; Portland. 1,711,674 bushela; Duluth, 1,167,100 bushels: Pu get sound, 1,105,(15 bushels; Philadel phia, 1,100,964) bushels. The total wheat exports for the month were 13,427,527 bushels. The total wheat exports for the month were 1$, 427. 527 bushels, a material Increase- over the quantity ex ported during the corresponding month of the year before, when 9,698,236 bush els were set afloat. Flour'shlpments from all parts of the Htntes were light; however, as compared with the business or last year, tne total being 1.086.616 barrels, of which quan tity Portland set afloat 60.723 barrels, and the combined Puget sound ports, 90.829 barrels. New York led al ports with 292.683 barrels, Philadelphia com ing second with 187,094. and Baltimore third with 121.980. Terrific seas were encountered by the steam schooner Nome City, Captain Hansen, on her way from San Francisco to Portland. She arrived here this morning with 16 pasHejiKcrs and about 600 tons of freiRht, and the officers de clare thev had the worst tossing they have had for three years. Although the'Noce city Is one of the begt aea " boats on the coast, her decks were waah a great deal of the time, tho waves oftentimes towering high above the smokestack. The passengers say it was an exciting trip, but they felt safe, knowing that the craft was perfectly seaworthy and well manned. Off the mouth of the Co lumbia last night a heavy sea boarded and rolled clear over the decks, put no damage' was done to the cargo so far as could be ascertained when the hatches were opened this mornlna. Captain Charles Pond, t'nltcd States llghtnouae Inspector, received official Information this morning authorizing tho location of a first class whistling buoy off Duncan rock at ths entrance to .the Straits of Juan da Fuca. Tha buoy will be placed in position as soon as possible. :T This buoy will be of great assistance to mariners headed fos tha straits as It will mark their approach to -Cans nailery, rna entrance to tne straits is often thick and stormy and every aid maintained there means additional safe guard against disaster. Much of the old material will be thrown out although not scorched by the flames that consumed a large percentage of the contents of the dock and the height between the lower and upper docks will be Increased. Washington street dock was built many years ago when traffic was much less than at present and conditions ex isting today were not provided for. Thus the helnht from the lower deck to the upper has become too low for the lare trucks that nowadays are . Been along the waterfront.
