AVKATHER REPORT perform at night he organize i a concert company and gave shows In the school houses. That was his star as a mana ger, but his bosses didn't approve and spoiled his plan. His brothers, Frank and Billy, were in the same show, one a bareback rider and the other a tumb ler. Tonv tried riding too, but fell off too often to make a success at it. Ulti mately, however, he became a ring master, vocalist and dancer in the side show. 801110111107 About Kla Life. At times he took up clowning and he (stuck to circuses until in 3 861 he turned up at the Broadway Music Hall as a comic singer. In 1SC1 lie went to the famous 444 Broadway and in the war time he aroused enthusiasm by appear- j ing on the stage with a big flag and urging every one to join with him In singing "The Star Spangled Banner." Here It was that he saw the future of vaudeville. Variety shows at that time were a little too coarso for family con sumption. LUjuor was sold In the au diences and smoking was allowed. Tony Pastor decided to branch out as a man ' agrer and put out a variety show on a higher plane. Ills money; went into the Idea and, with Sam Sharpley, the mln-! s?trel manager, he leased the Volks Oar- I don in New York and in March, lSfi5, J lie announced vaudeville fit for women 1 to attend. He was a vaudeville manager! always after that. Success didn't come without-a lot of! hard work, but it arrived finally and in I 10 years he opened his new theatre at 5S6 Broadway and began his policy of bringing over European performers and j of encouraKins local talent. ) Introduces XiUlian Russell, ! Thus he introduced Nat flood win and! Lillian Russell In 1 STfi and bestowed! upon the latter her stag-e. name. She 1 was a Miss Leonard and asked Pastor's! advice about changioe;- her name fori professional purposes. He suggested Lillian Russell". and she approved. May: Irwin and her sister, Flo, played tinder his management enrly in their careers, as did many others whose names are now well known both in vaudeville and in the so-called "legitimate ' Some of them, who might well be called the Pas tor alumni a nd alumnae, are Florence lirlndley, Our "Williams, Richard Car- ; roll. Francis "Wilson, a song and dance i artist under Pastor; Denrnan Thompson,' later of "Old Homestead" fame; "Old ' lloss- Hcey and his partner, Charley Ev- j ana; Hilly Barry, who did his nrst negro monologue for Tony, Jennie Yeamans and Pat Rooney. Pastor also introduced the first ver sion of condensed comic opera in his presentation of "Pinafore" at the old theatre. In 1KS1 he moved his theatre to Fourteenth street and there he brought cut Jenny Hill, the English music hall singer; Vesta Tilley. Bessie Bonehill, Bessie Bel wood and Vesta Vic toria. His Opening Bill, His opening toil on Fourteenth street was Iltth; different from the show he continued to give last year. Tonv him self sang his old songs, such as "flown In the Coal Mine," which he hud to re jpeat when he appeared 1 n the stage on jils birthday in Hiofl. He wasn't much of a singer, as voices go, but his audi ences Jikcd him immensely just the ?am The theatre next door to Tammnnv Hall apparently s.itisrled his ambition. He Thought ci branching out again to upper Broadway, but thought again, and thought better of it. "1 owe my good health and my good ppirits," he said last year, "to the fact that I am not worried by ambition. Fre qnently I have been asked why I did not move up on Broadway. One I listened to these suggestions and actu ally commenced negotiations with the Sires Then something or orher went wrong and I never made another ai tempt. The barometer Is relatively low over Arizona and New Mexico. The high pressure area yester day over the north Pacific states has contracted in area and moved to Wyo ming, and a new. high pressure area has made its appearance off the north Cali fornia coast. The large high pressure area over the Canadian province of On tario has remained nearly stationary, and the low area over the south Atlantic states has disappeared. Light rain has fallen In western Washington, northern Arizona, northern New Mexico and In the Atlantic states from Boston south to Charleston.
