If you go the erudite xeoanovt un ' hear a lot of learned talk about the "great ages" of the earth s formation, the "genesis af ore deposits and the "chemical laws' that govern the for mation and precipitation of minerals; hut cpnbiv furnishes no scientific for mulae of general application in wh.ili X Is the quantity, quality and location of mineral deposits, that tnav,be mathe matically calculated and determined Each mine is n whole congregation of Xa standing solitary and alone, and must be calculated bv its own individual factors. Of mining: promoters, boomers and peculators there are many, but of the men who supply the money, brains and faith-devoted vears to methodical, Intelligent development of a single min ing property, there are but few. If it were not bo, Oregon would be. plethoric of great mines Their scarcity Is not due to lack of minerals in its hills. But to develop these ore bodies into paving mines, requires Qualities of brain and character that are rare among men. And when the work Is done, as this kind of work usually is done, with out flourish of trumpets and bomblla tlon, It is all tho more admirable. The Black Butte Vine. These prefacing remarks appropri ately Introduce the subject of the Black Butte Quicksilver mine, an Industry of I,ane county, Oregon. In the foothills Of the Oalfpoola mountains, on the coast fork of the Willamette river, 16 miles south of Cottage Grove, a great mine has been carved out of the hilla'. It baa taken 10 long years of faith fully devoted work, and a pile of the yellow metal, to do It; but a great in dustry has bjeen established which will give lucrative employment to men anJ sustenance for their families, probably for many long years after the man who has pioneered it has been gathered to his fathers. Against all odds, discouragements and difficulties, of which there have been plenty, as in all work of this kind, the development of the mine has gone steadily forward.
