The shepherds on ths Islands valtis this gum highly aa a salve for wounds and bruises. The balsam hog is the most dlcho tomous (branches by constant forking) plant in existence. The ground la owned by the Flanders estate but has been leased for a tarm of years to Harry rtoward, who will have the new wharf constructed, sub leasing It to the Columbia Digger com pany and Charles J. Cook. It Is under stood that the dock will be equipped with the largest bunkers In the city for, the reception of sand and gravel and large derricks will be Installed whereby the material can be handled with dispatch from barges on the river. The present structure Is In an ex ceedingly dilapidated condition aa a result of having stood the pressure or thousands of tons of material handled during the past several years. The river also undermined some of the pil ing, rauslng the foundation to shift and throw the weight of the dock against adjoining buildings. There was no seri ous danger of the dock collapsing, however, because the piling while out of plumb, were firmly Imbedded In the I river bottom and as sound as the day I they were driven. The old dock will be torn out com- fletely and a new foundation laid for he new structure. This Is the third large structure of Its kind to be started this summer, the Spokane. There are some 20" of these Islands, al though It Is posslhle that only tho two largest will appear on your map. They will perhaps give the impres slon. because thev are so nearly oppo site the lower extremity of South Amer ica, of being situated well toward the South Pole, though as a matter of fact thev are little If any farther south of the equator than the city of Ixmdon Is north of it. Th;re are no seasons in the Falklands; or else, there is only one. the November of tho north of England or the Scottish border. The average teniDerature on the Islands In midwinter Is five degrees above the freezing point, and In mid summer only 10 degrees above that. On an average of 2D0 days out of the year the skies are overcast with heavy clouds, and rain Is falling either In sue csslve showers or a never ceasing drli zle. with general humidity up nearly to saturation point, cold, wet wines, ana mist. Although the cold Is not Intense at any time, or with very rare excep tions, the climate of the Falkland Islands is too uniformly chilly to admit the raising of wheat, or even the rip ening of oats or barley. The Incessant drlzale, the fog ami rainfalls, and the absence of summer sunsnine ana sum mer heat, prevent field or garden plants from ripening tholr seeds. And yet the peculiar character of the climate fosters strange growths, the like of whlcb are to ba found nowhere else on earth. Here, for Instance, Is to be seen tho Falklander's nut tree, which Is not a tree at all, but a great tuft of grass which grows from six to eight feet high. The stems and leaves or blades of "tussock grass." aa it is called by the islanders, Dactylls caespltosa by botan ists, are simply irresistible to ail plant eating animals, which prefer It to any other kind of food; but besides this all the lower part of the reedy stems, and the stool-shaped root crowns from which thev irrow. possess a sweet and delio- ious nutlike taste, which is, unluckily, aa much appreciated by the pigs and rats Introduced by the colonists, as by the settlers themselves; in consequence of which the Falklander's nut tree stands in great danger of speedily be coming extinct. There is. however, another curiosity of this sort In the Falkland Islands, which fortunately does not appear to share this danger. It Is called by the Islanders the "balsam bog." by the vis itors who see it for the first time, "the living boulders." and by scientists, bolnx glebarla.. It Is strange that so remark able a plant should not be better known In a popular way; for it may Justly claim to be not only the most extraor dinary member of the plant world to be found In the Falklands. but In some re spects the most wonderful vegetable growth yet discovered. If. on visiting the archipelago, you look about a bit. you are sure to sea in tho lowlands numbers of what ap pear to ba gray, weather-beaten boul ders of various slaes, perhaps from three to eight feet across. As boulders, there seems to be nothing at all re markable In their appearance. In some grass Is growing in bands, where there are crevices, or In bunches, where there are small, shallow depressions In which a little dump soil Is collected Attempt to turn over tbe smallest of these boulders, and you will moot th surprise of your lire. In discovering that It In anchored to the earth by ro.ita of great strength, and that It Is one if the natlva forem trees of the Falkland Islands. Examine It closely, and you will e. that It is covered with little symmetri cal slx-slded markings like a piece of deda coral that has been exposed lo tho weather for sometime. Those on the corals are formwl by the rornl polyps, but these are the forms taken Dy tbe leaves and leaf buds terminat ing clusters of stems which for hun dreds of years have been growing with extreme slowness, and continually branching- as they grew, until space for further branching Is wanting.
