Pendleton Or.. Aug. .".That Oregon woolgrowers were literally "robbed'' out of approximately i;SO,iHl0 tills year, was the statement made to an hast Ore gonian reporter this morning, and the report of the wool sales held at Miles Cltv. Mont.. July 27. was cited as evi dence. This report shows the following sales: 869 sacks, or nearly 500.000 pounds, at 187c; 261 sacks at 17c; 404 sacks nt 17He; 4'.t"i sacks at from lf'.o to 17c and 98 sacks at from 15c. to 16c YVhen it Is remembered that the aver age price paid for Hie iregnn clip was but 12c, a glance at the above figures will lend credence to the statement mude by an informed Portland man this morning, who says Oregon sheep men were entitled to approximately 4 cents more per pound. Tnis man has followed the situation carefully, not onlv this year but for a number of vt-ars. and Is probably as well posted iiH to the facts as any man In the northwest. I The price for the Oregon clip was 12c. while that for the Montana clip Is prob- ably 16c, ' certainly not below that fig- lire", -showing a difference f 4c, which i on this year's 1 7.000,000 pounds clip I means a loss to the state of $ 6 si'i.oim. This loss Is distributed principally1 among a few eastern Oregon count i It now seems apparent that the, be ers efime. Into the field this year with a determination to take advantage of the uncertain market and slump the prices as much as possible. Tim Ore gon fleeces, being 111" first clipped, were, put on the market first and were there fore made to suffer. That the local growers made a big mistake in alb. w!ni.- the sales tn be held here when tl.ey did Is universally admitted and teat they will make a worse one next year If they allow their sabs to be held hef..re the question of tariff revision Is definitely settled, Is also generally- believed. While all eastern .ingon flock nnn ors were heavy b.s.is this year. t'i"s,. of Umatilla county suffered more than auv of the others, b. -cause the very first sales were held here and 12c yvas eh-se to the top price here Instead of the average. Wheat closed For stealing chairs, carpets, ruga. and In fact everything ho could carry off, Frederick Strong, the garden hose thief who barely escaped from Pa trolmnn Wade yesterday morning, la now being sought by the police. Ills home on Noitlirup between Eighteenth and Nineteenth was rallied by Detectives Jones and Tlcbenor at noon today. A wagonload of stolen goods was found and brought to thu police station. Strong was absent from home when the officer called, but Mrs. Strong and his two children were there. She would, of course, give no Information regarding the movements of her hus band. Apparently Strong, whose name wna written on tho Inside -of the Panama hat which fell off when Strong Jumped a back fence and escaped from the policeman, used his spnody. cushion bicycle to ride out North Portland and levy upon careless householders. But he did not follow the usual methods of sneaJc thieves' In selling tho stolen articles to pawnshops, but Instead used them to furnish his own comfortable i home. The detectives have been trying vain ly for weeks to find tho man who was so persistently helping himself to fur niture and hose left outside houses along North Eighteenth and Nineteenth streets, but the fact that Strong made no move toward disposing of the goods made the task very difficult. Patrolman Waile was stationed along Nineteenth street yesterday morning to find tho early morning burglar. Strong oame along at 6 o'clock on a bicycle and took a section of garden hose.. When questioned by the officer, "he led the way to 128 North Eighteenth, and then, on a pretext, got into the back yard, and, Jumping- the fenoe, made good his escape. His Panama hat, with his name written Inside, gave the clue the detectives needed. Mrs. Strong, when questioned today, said the bicycle, also left behind yesterday, an. expensive ma chine, was brought frgjn Chicago. Among the articles found In the house were several sections of garden hose. MORTON C, HADLEY. (I'lilitftJ Prcst l.eaM'1 Ylre.) Winnipeg, Man., Aug. 8.
