L THE ORKUUN DAILX JUUKNAW FOKAXAMD, XHUKSOAY KViSWlNO, JUNK II, ltfua. it -I FO DAY'S MARKETS smiiurkei HOLDING STIFF Canned Goods Market , in Pine Shape With Most , Orders Being' Refused. Portland wholesale markets: Salmon market very good. . Canned fruit , trade bad. - ; , Btrawberry market better, Chicken market Is down. Egg values not so steady.' Red onions quoted lower. Heavy supplies gooseberries. Asparagus price is down. Pot Diato trade holds stiff. . . Salmon Varket Is T Oood. - Now that the Columbia river packers have opened their 108 values on canned salmon, the trade Is settling down to a basis. -The market is In very, fine shape with the requirements of the trade somewhat larger than supplies in all grades. The market is especially firm for chlnooks and sockeyes and a : much" better tone is - ruling; - for ted Alaskan.- - . SDeakinar of the market in general for salmon the Orlfdth-Durney com pany say in a recent, circular: s .';, - .. Jobbers1 Stocks X.lgnt. .-. The . writer returned front the east .. n on4 A,,ir ha .fill PM gif , his trip, which occupied the better part .'.of-two months, be visited practically very city of prominence in the United States, and we can now state without fear' of, oontradlcUon that not for 10 years have Jobbers' stocks of Alaska , red salmon been as. low as they, are .today. . -, - 'i m-v -A-y;, .(.. ; "We don't believe : 10 per cent of w VB", mm. ' " " the trada have ufflnlent Alaska red aaimon to last them' until the first of August A number of New York Jobbers are entirely out. and are trying to buy elsewhere. Several thousand cases have recently been shipped from England to New Yortc, and while the English mar ket has been very firm, this demand - from New York has made It still firmer, with the result that the ""market has advanced 6d llo) par case during; the last week. -. . . "When the writer was In England a year ago . ne iota tne Kngiven Duyers that this country would set, the paoe and make the price for red salmon for 1607. The situation is reversed this year, and we believe that owing to the xtremeiy ngnt stocxs in ureat Britain, and the small quantity on the way, the English market will set the tace and make the price for the domestic marxet , in is year. ... . v hor. Tea fo ooksyss. "Ton probably understand that this la the shortest year in the cycle of four on sockeyes, and that while there were 560,000 cases of sockeyes alone packed on Fuget sound in 1906, preparations are being made for not to exceed 76, V 000 cases this year; in fact, ft 1s the conoensu of opinion that there will not be to exceed (0,000 cases of sockeyes pacitea on tne sound, ana most, jr not ail. win D pacKea in i-id. nai cans. The run' tip to date on the Colombia river is extremely light . Every packer on the river Is refusing to book orders ror chinooks, even subject to approval or pnee. and most e very dog y is limit Ins; buyers to 10 per cent falls. Tou can, therefore, see that the only choice salmon that buyers can' secure in 1-lb. tall cans to any extent is the Alaska red, and already wise buyers-who have given the situation any , thought have entered their, orders for practically all th red salmon they will need ""subject to'approval of 'opening- price.. .' Remember, thl Is the off year on humpbacks; that while- we packed over 600,000 cases of humpbacks on the Puget sound last year there will be very few Dut ud this year, and It Is, therefore, safe to predict that the coast pacx tnis year win do eou.ovo cases in 780. ono cases less than laat vear. and that under the most favorable cir cumstances we cannot hope to pack sufficient salmon this year to supply tne demand. Strawberry Market Better. A better tone ruled in " the straw berry market today along Front street. Arrivals were of better quality and re ceipts were not so heavy. The - best Hood River fruit sold between $x.50 2.76 durlnar the morning. -while 11.760. J. 60 was obtained -for the Willamette vauey siock. - : aMd' Onion Quoted Slower. Red onions are quoted lower today by the local trade with more liberal unDlies. Potato market Is in very fine shape with the best stock still holding; at II in a jobbing way. Asnarasua la lower with much heav let supplies but the trade Is cleaning up all arrivals at printed quotations. . California tomatoes . are lower with more liberal supplies. . Better quality, ho we ver - . j . - j- . ? . Gooseberries are coming very freely at this .time but the price la only, frac tionally ' down. . . ;. Ichlokea Market Xs Bown. A decline of 4 to o a pound is shown in the late trading in the chicken market.' . For hens the average price aiong tne street toaay was izc a pound and the market is .not any too good even at the lower range, - Springs are down to 17t4018o for most sales. Eggs are down another fraction With rather- liberal supplies. Most of the increase was caused by th iack of shipments during the Rose Festival. country Visitors neglecting the hen and eggs to see the big show. . Dressed meats are. v fraction easier with only the best stun moving - at quoted figures. . nAM- . - Front street sells at the following prices.
