One of the largest sales of high grade
Shorthorn stock ever held Jn Portland
took place yesterday '. afternoon at the
Union stockyards i when Alexander
Chalmers of Forest Grove disposed of
a herd of 80 pure blooded cattle to
number of stock fanciers gathered to
gether at the sale. .
Mr. Chalmers ha the reputation of
being the breeder ot some of the high
est grade stock in the northwest, and

the Shorthorn exhibitors for several

stockmen of the city and state. .
Several well-known bulls and cows
that have taken ribbons were disposed
of during the day. Among them was
Canadian Victor, a year and a half old.

for $125; English Marquis, bought by
O. M. Plummer for $100; Country BelL
bought by Bichlll Bros, for $225.
J. W. Bailey bought a fine specimen
of milking Shorthorn, purchasing Silver
Duchess for $126. Stockmen cencede
that under ordinary condition of th
market the 1 cow would have brought
double that amount
Sweet Blossom, another fine specimen
of Shorthorn cow was bought by O. M.
Plummer for $110. A number of other
promising young cattle went to the bid
of Mr. Plummer. :-'
Stiver Lorne. a fine young cow, was
bought by T. M. Mikle of Olequa, Wash
ington, for $100. .
The union stockyards bought a num
ber of choice cattle out of the herd,
making 16 purchase in all. One of
these, a white calf, will be put- Into
training for exhibition- at the Country
club exhibit with the. expectation that
it will be able to take the first ribbon
with ease. . will afterward be ex
hibited at the state fair and a a year
ling next year before the Country club.

$100,000,000 of electric equipment for
steam roads under consideration in thts
country. Including the work planned by
the Now Haven, New ' York Central,
Pennsylvania, Harrlman lines and oth
ers. One of the Eastern Trunk lines
is planning an expenditure o(w$35,000,
000 in electrifying.
" 'The New Haven railroad electrifi
cation will be extended to New Haven.
Conn., and work upon thla section will
soon be started. Plans are also pre
pared for electric installation on the
New Haven road between Providence
and Boaton. The New York Central

out of New York and has plana for the
electrification of the Boston A Albany

York and New Haven system It la
claimed that the New Haven Is show
ing the greatest economy in operation,
but the New York Central has $3,500.

Najib Khury has had a varied career
In the courts. While his wife's suit
for divorce waa pending last winter ne
amused himself by writing letters to
his wlfs that burned with Assyrian

romantic language of the far east were
read to Judge Cleland while Khury and
his wife were fighting over alimony
and the custody of the child.
In February Mrs. Khury obtained a
divorce and waa granted custody of the
baby. Najlb has several times called
to see the child, as he had a right to
do under the order of the; court, but

James Lee of Gaston, Or., got a fine
3-year-old horse, a smart buggy and a
set of good harness for 25 cents a few
days ago, and now the police depart
ment has become solicitous of Mr. Lee's
bargain and he stands to lose his two
bits, also the horse, buggy and harness.
The purchase was made in a livery
stable at Front and Columbia streets.
Mr. Lee happened to be there, he says.
