Where one steamboat was employed about one third of the time a year ago supplying the White Bluffs country there will be six In operation this sum mer. The increase Is indicative of the enormous development of the early fruit belt of the Columbia river valley between Kennewick and Priest Rapids. During the past seven months two steamers, the Mountain Gem and the W. K. Todd, have been swamDed with business and a great deal of freight hus been handled overland from North Yakima and other points, as the boats were unable to handle all that was of feree Four new steamers are to be added to the fleet of the up-river district. One of these Is the Yakima, one of the astest and heaviest steamboats on the Columbia and Snake river waters. The steamer has been plying between Astoria and Tillamook for several years, but the PaclHo Navlgntlon company has come to the conclusion that shippers con do better with the craft operating out of Portland. The Elmore service last fall was not satisfactory to the people of Tillamook bay and they started agitation for 'an opposition line to operate between Port land and the bay. From Bay City comes the report that while the owners of the Elmore Indicate Improving the service, there Is still room far another line and merchants are at work In the interest of the opposition line.
