Manager Tt. P. Schwerln of the Har-
rlman water lines, announced yesterday
that the Hamburg-American liners now
plying between this port and the orient
have been rechartered for another year,
commencing from the first of May next
and the subsequent monthly departures
of the four liners.
The Hamburg-American line has been
handling the business for the Harrl-
mun system very satisfactory, so tt la
understood. In view of the fact that the
contract has been renewed several
times since first entered Into half a
dozen years ao. Prior to that time
new boats were as a rule secured with
the expiration of each charter party.
Four Hteamers, the Alrsla, Numantia,
Nleomedla and Arabia, are kept con
tinually on the run, maintaining a
monthly schedule, and they have so
far managed to handle the constantly
growing business with the assistance
of an orcnslonal tramp freighter during
the busy months of fall when the peo
ple of the orient put in their supplies
for the winter. The company owns a
lariy fleet, of vessel nf th typo on
the route so that more can be added
on short notice should business so de
mand. The liner Numantia, which Is now
here, will begin loading flour tomorrow
at Alaska dock. She will take about
60.001) battels this trip and the larger
portion of it will go to Vladivostok, Si
beria. Manager Scherwln, who hus
been here a week super! ntrnd ing tho
discharging and loading of the system's
liners, spent most of yesterday on
Alaska dork looking after the handling
or tno ireigni. At times tie wouhl di
rect a truck and wheel it nround showing
how It could be handled to the bst
advantage, and the next moment lie
would watch slinss of frelpht rise from
the depths of the holds where long
shoremen were working with the pre
cision of clockwork.
Manager Bcherwln will remain here
until the work of loading the Numan
tia Is well under way In order that he
might see for himself where Improve
ments In the service might be brought
about.
The Numantia brought a light freight
this time and It Is Intended to have her
loaded and ready for the sea In a week
from today. She will go out with a
capacity cargo.

White Bluffs. Wash., March 7.
Where one steamboat was employed
about one third of the time a year ago
supplying the White Bluffs country
there will be six In operation this sum
mer. The increase Is indicative of the
enormous development of the early
fruit belt of the Columbia river valley
between Kennewick and Priest Rapids.
During the past seven months two
steamers, the Mountain Gem and the
W. K. Todd, have been swamDed with
business and a great deal of freight
hus been handled overland from North
Yakima and other points, as the boats
were unable to handle all that was of
feree
Four new steamers are to be added to
the fleet of the up-river district. One
of these Is the Yakima, one of the
astest and heaviest steamboats on the
Columbia and Snake river waters. Bhe
was recently stranded while In commis
sion on the Snake, handling freight for
he railway construction camDS. but will
be floated and repaired at an early date.
me bt. I'aul, a neavy. packet liner
f the llllaatlkee Packet" company on
he upper Columbia, has been leased bv
he Columbia River Steamboat com
pany, operating the Mountain Gem, and
he will be brought to this port to
alternate with the Gem. both to work
conjunction in handling the freight
nd pnssenger business of that line be-
ween Kennewick and Priest Rapids.
C. A. Lundv & Co. of Kennewick are
having a 70-foot twin-screw propeller
built for thHi waters, and she will go
into commission April 15. Captain
BauKhman, tho olden navigator on the
Columbia and one of the best-known
river steamboat men of the west, has
let the contract to 'J acorn a shipbuilders
for u gasoline propeller boat 45 feet
lonp: with seven-foot beam and 25
horsepower engine. This vessel Is under
contract to make IS miles ao hour.
The Hanford company has lot the
contract for the grading of the elec
tric road between Priest Rapids and
Kennewick and work will be commenced
within 15 days.
Mass Meeting.
Next Wednesday evening there will be
a mass meeting of the citizens of Pied
mont under th9 auspices of the local
Improvement club, which will be ad
dressed by W. Wynn1 Johnson upon the
topic of "Municipal Art. This topic
will be presented In a manner that will
Interest the ladles as well as the gentle
men, the young as well as the old.
The Piedmont Improvement club, of
wnicn ueorge r. ient Is president, has
been instrumental in starting a number
of notable campaigns for the civic bet
terment of Piedmont, one of the most
aristocratic suburbs of the city. The
meeting Wednesday night will be held
at the Piedmont Presbyterian church.
The steamer Sue H. Elmore arrived
at Oak street dock last night from As
toria She is booked to leave for Til-
amook next Tuesday and thereby in
augurate a weekly schedule between
Portland and that prosperous section.
The steamer has been plying between
Astoria and Tillamook for several years,
but the PaclHo Navlgntlon company has
come to the conclusion that shippers
con do better with the craft operating
out of Portland.
The Elmore service last fall was not
satisfactory to the people of Tillamook
bay and they started agitation for 'an
opposition line to operate between Port
land and the bay. From Bay City
comes the report that while the owners
of the Elmore Indicate Improving the
service, there Is still room far another
line and merchants are at work In the
interest of the opposition line.
Add More Vessels.
The plan which a number of mer
chants of Bay City and Tillamook have
indorsed Is to place the gasoline schoon
er Anvil In commission between Port
land and the bav and to add more craft
of the same type wnenever the growth
of the trade so demands. The signers
to the agreement have pledged their
patronage for a period of two years.
The Anvil has a keel or 111 feet and
when loaded draws 8 lA feet of water.
She can accommodate 60 night passen
gers and can carry 260 day passengers,
and 300 tons of freight Her speed Is
12 miles an hour. '
It is also rumored at Bay City that
the Paclllc Navigation company will put
Its gasoline schooner Eva on the As-toria-Tillamook
bay run. In addition to
the Elmore, the former to handle, way
point passengers ana freight traffic,
while the Elmore will run direct from
Portland to Tillamook City.

Hardware Business Improve.
There Is a large demand for builder's
tools and hardware. The Ross.company
on Grand avenue report an Increase of
60 per cent in business during the
month of February over that of March.
Mr. Koss says that their business
during the last month far exceeded their
expectations and their establishment
has been orowded to Its fullest capacity
