SWIFT IS A LITTLE TOO SPEEDY EVEN FOR FAST REPORTERS ' Louie F. 8wlt, the Chicago packer who was in Portland this wee arrang ing details to begin work on a packing plant tor Swift Co., la particularly partial to lavender. Ho changed cravats every day. but. each of them waa pi lavender of a different Bhade. i Mr. Swift is a big man in every sense of the word. is about six feet in height, well proportioned and inclined to be flertiy. He Is smooth ahaven and his hair la 'sprinkled with grey. Mr. Swift does not like to talk to newspaper men. Particularly when he comes to a city . to start a new Indus try that Is to cost something like 14,000,000. When he is approached' by a reporter, which is only when he can't get away, he Usually asks the first question. "Well, what's the trouble now?" is the millionaire's favorite way of greet ing -the reporters. But Mr. Swift Is always polite. He might leave a newspaper man In the middle of an interview, but never with out excusing himself and apologising for abruptly breaking off the conver sation. Accompanied by two Journal report ers, one on each side of him, Mr. Swift walked several blocks Saturday night and answered questions as fast as the pair could hand them out. P0ETLAND STREETS DISGRACE TO CITY A campaign for cleaner streets will be begun by the municipal committee of the Portland chamber of commerce. The committee, ho held one meeting and will reconvene again for the purpose of conferring within the next few days on plans and methods. The committee is composed of S. H. Oruber. H. M. Cake, J. C. Ainsworth. J. O. Rountree and J. C. Bayer. So bad has the general con dition of Portland streets become that the subject is one for unfavorable com ment by every visitor. Nearly every one who comes to Portland for a trio of sight-seeing and investigation would be Immensely pleased with this city were Its streets paved and clean.
