Mr. Swift is a big man in every sense

Mr. Swift does not like to talk to
newspaper men. Particularly when he
comes to a city . to start a new Indus

14,000,000. When he is approached' by
a reporter, which is only when he can't
get away, he Usually asks the first
question.
"Well, what's the trouble now?" is
the millionaire's favorite way of greet

But Mr. Swift Is always polite. He
might leave a newspaper man In the
middle of an interview, but never with

for abruptly breaking off the conver

The reporters were dumfounded.
They stood around and thought of the

Portland and have a suburb Swlftville
named in bis honor.

DISGRACE TO CITY
A campaign for cleaner streets will
be begun by the municipal committee of
the Portland chamber of commerce. The
committee, ho held one meeting and
will reconvene again for the purpose of
conferring within the next few days on
plans and methods. The committee is
composed of S. H. Oruber. H. M. Cake,
J. C. Ainsworth. J. O. Rountree and J.
C. Bayer. So bad has the general con
dition of Portland streets become that
the subject is one for unfavorable com

one who comes to Portland for a trio
of sight-seeing and investigation would
be Immensely pleased with this city
were Its streets paved and clean.
