"BILLY" GLEAS0N IS GRANDFATHER NOW "Billy" Gleason of the Baker Stock company Is today walking down Mor rison and up Washington streets, back and forth, with a very haughty air. But If haughty It Is by the same token happy. For Mr. Gleason is for the first time a grandparent. That la itiat a roundabout way Of saying that there Was horn to Mr. and Mrs. James Gleason this morning, a very fine son, who has, so the proud grand father states, a fine Sir Henry Irvlng Uke cast of features and a voice that nrnmlnp. much In the way of histrionic talent. In fact Mlna Crollus Gleason declares that he has the best stage voice she has heard In her experience and everybody knows that Mrs. Gleason knows what she Is talking about. There promises to De someimng in tnA wav nf an ovation for the Gleason family at the Baker theatre this even ing, where "David Harum." a strictly Gleason family affair, is being present ed. The only objection the young father hna la that thara la no Dlace for a leading Juvenile. But the youngest Mr, Gleason's days are com!ng RECEPTION IN v HONOR OF PASTOR Dr. J. CALIFOHNIANS TO ATTEND CARNIVAL imiuif tha lara-a rjarties of visitors at the Portland Rose Fiesta next June will be the Sacramento Valley Develop? ment association, which will run a ape rial train over the Southern Paclflo from Sacramento to Portland to carry its members to the festival of roses. R. M. Hail and J- I. uasent, secretary of tha Portland Ad club, have received word that preparations for the excur sion have been begun. The Sacramento valley organisation Is expected to come at least 160 trnni. It Is one of the area test of California's promotion clubs and takes an active part In the work of the Paolfio Coast Advertising; Men's association., T BOON TO LIVESTOCK FAIRS Better Service in Shipping Asked From Railroads by Association. 1 Discussion of better arrangements with tha railroads in the matter of ship ping and handling blooded stock ooca pled most of the time during the de liberations at the meeting yesterday of the Oregon Pur Bred Livestock as sociation in th Hamilton building. The livestock association according to cus tom holds Its meeting at the same time as the North Paclflo Fair association which also met yesterday In the same Duiiding. The meeting called to order yesterday by President Richard Hcott or Mliwau kle was one of the best attended ever held. F. H. Fogarty, assistant general freight agent of the Northern Paclflo. and R. B. Miller, general freight agent of the Harrlman lines, were invited to attend the meeting, which they did. As a result the consultation that took place was a peculiarly profitable one. ftome Bettor stai-rloe. It Is the obl.ct of tha livestock men to secure better accommodations during the time they are making th circuit of the fairs with their stock. Among other thlna-s they want the railroads to aetaii a capable freight agent during the fair season wnose oniy auty win oe io travel alona with tha stock men and see that they get accommodations at every city In which they exhibit. tinder existing conditions the stock men are met at every station by a dif ferent freight agent. Sometimes the frelcht aa-ent Is cental and accommo dating and sometimes he Is not In this same connection the stockmen have atiked that they be allowed the use of the same cars. It la Quite an Item of expense and Inconvenience to the breed ers when they are required to build new stalls and otherwise arrange their cars when traveling from one fair to another. The fairs start late in August and fol low In consecutive weeks until Novem ber 1. If these two points can be rained the stockmen believe they will have won a big victory. Because of past troubles with the carriers many breeders of ure stock have refused to send va ma le herds to the exhibitions. It will be a great concession to the breeder who show every year in the nortn racino fair circuit and a stimulus for breeding naoro pure stock In the northwest. Hards Buffer. Several breeders related to the rail road officials their experiences, telling how their herds had suffered In transit from one fair to another because of Im proper treatment by freight agents along the line of travel and at the point of unloading and reloading. A commit tee was appointed consisting or Kicn ard Scott. It. Wilson and Frank Brown to further consider the matter. Every fair Droirram when it is Is sued by the fair association In May. will have the name or the railroad freight agents and other arrangements Included for th convenience of the stock exhibitors as they will have been agreed upon between the committee ap pointed yesterday ana tne railroads. This will be of immenao convenience to the stockmen In every part of the northwest. Changes In classification and premium lists were discussed. A committee on this subject was appointed last year end recommended yesterday that each fair adopt unlrorm rules. The commit tee was continued so It could conclude Its work. By chancing the classifica tion 11 Is thought bigger herds may be Induced to enter. One change discussed was that of age. It Is thought that an age claesiricatlon would De desirable. Premiums will also be Increased both In number and value. There was a lane attendance both from Washington and Idaho besides the Oregon men nnd at the banquet that followed last evening at the Com mercial club there were nearly 100 pres ent. The banquet was given by the Portland Country club and Livestock association, mate rood and Dairy Com missioner J. W. Bailey presided as toastmaster. Tells of Club's Plans. 8. G. Reed, president of the Portland association, started the after-dinner talks by telling of the work and Inten tions of the new Portland Country club and admirable opportunities presented ror promoting tne stock raising indus try In the northwest.
