For the death of Victoria Beatrice Pe terson, who waa killed by the explosion of a can supposed to contain kerosene, a Jury last night returned a verdict for $2,500 damagea against the Standard OH company. The ault was brought by Ernest Peterson aa administrator of tha estate of the girl, who lost her life while employed as a domestic by Mrs. Mary Rowley of Troutdale. The verdict waa returned at 10 o'clock laat night after a trial lasting four days. On the part of the plaintiff It waa claimed that the liauld sold bv the Standard Oil company as coal oil waa in fact distillate. The girl usd the liquid for starting a fire and In the explosion that followed she was so badly burned that she died. It was chareeil that hart the can contained kerosene, as had been supposed, the explosion would Jiot have taken place. Considerable expert testimony waa In troduced during the trial and the attor neys for the defendant argued the the ory or contributory negligence, on the ground that the girl knew the risk she was taking when she started to kindle a firo with oil. The evidence waa closed before Judge Bronaugh yesterday niiciii'iuu, anu me jury at one time re ported it was unable to agree, but iinauy reacnea a compromise verdict. PETER J. FLYNN DIES AT ST. VINCENT'S Peter J. Flynn. a retired contractor of tnis city, ajea last evening at St. Vln cent s hospital, after a serious Illness of two months. Mr. Flynn waa In the contracting business here for 25 years and waa associated at different times with James McBrlde and A. J. Bing ham. He retired from active business about two years ago. Mr Flynn was born at Philadelphia. April 19, 1867, and came to Portland In 1878. He was married In June, 1882, to Miss Elizabeth Beutgyn of this city. A widow, four sisters and two brothers survive him Mra. Rose A, Heffernan, 1 Mrs. Sarah T. Gibbon and James L. Flynn of loungstown, Ohio; Mrs. Mary u Mara or Anaconaa. Montana: Mra William O'Hare of San Francisco, and John J. Flynn of Portland. The funeral will probably be held Monday upon the arrival of Mra U Hare irom Kan Fran. Cisco.
