Diminutive Schooner Outsails Four Master Off the Coast. The gasoline schooner Berwick, Cap tain Jacobsen. arrived in the harbor last night with a cargo of froien ateel head salmon from Hume's cannery on Rogue river, and one passenger. The craft made a record trip, covering the distance from the Rogue river to the mouth of the .Columbia in two days. Off the coast the little two masted schooner ran a race with a large four masted bark, believed to be the Nal, which reached the Columbia river Tues day night, several hours after the Ber wick had crossed In and found a com- 'A...M. .nnhArsivA In thA tmv. Wentworth towed a raft of loga so close to the docks on the west side of the river last night that one of tha sticks caught the monkey rudders of the towboat Sarah Dixon lying at Davia street dock and bent them out of shape. They are being re paired today. The lighthouse tender Armerla left for Coos Bay this morning to replead the whistling buoy which went adrift some days ago from Its position near th Jetty. EXPLOSION ON LAUNCH. Machinist Lights Match and Finds Leak in Oil Tank. Alexander Franklyn, a machinist lighted a match yesterday afternoon to find a leak In the gasoline tank on a launch owned by JU O. Ralston and housed at the foot of Oak street. Franklyn found the leak but by that time the entire forward portion of the craft was wrapped In a sheet of flames and he himself got busy finding some means of escape. He succeeded and without being seriously scorched. An alarm was turned in from Oak treat dock and a chemical enarlne re sponded promptly. Captain Amos of i the launch Eva pulled the burning , launch out or its nouse ana tnus maae it easy for the firemen to get to work. They put out the flames so quickly that the woodwork of the cabin was hardly damaged. The flreboat George H. Williams came across the river and stood by until the blaze was put out by the chemicals.
