The weight man waxes fat on training, bis object being to lane on weignt and retain nia speed. He has his beer snd cigars if he wsnts them, and seldom if ever Is In danger of becoming "fine." The weignt inrow er'a effort In competition seldom costs mm more man a pound or two. Compare this lino of work with thst of the sversgs runnor and It Is readily seen that the avxrare weignt man stays in the game longer. The runner Is no good until he gets "fine and be gins to look drawn In the face. While he Is In flesh hs mlsht lust as wel stay at home for all the good It will do him .to go Into a race. Then hla ef fort In competition Is vsstly more wearing than a weight throwers task. Aside from the actual weight lost the nervous strain la crest. MIKE DONOVAN TELLS : WHAT BOXER MUST EAT Tot years Professor Mike Donovan, boxing Instructor "of the New York Ath letlo club, has surprised the club mem' bers and his many friends by his splen did physical condition. In solte of ad. vanclng years he has retained his quick eye, his agility and his strength and r.nat is a remaraaoie achievement for a man who has to face a continuous series of uppercuts and body blows for hours at a time. It is lntereatlne in know how Donovan has for years kept his weight about 164 pounds, and, with the exception of his Illness last win. ter, has enjoyed remarkably good health. Like Hugh Leonard, the wrestling Instructor, he is a thorough believer in the fattening and nutritious quality of milk. For breakfast he sips a pint of warm milk about 8 o'clock. His luncheon at 1 o'clock consists merely of two sliced bananas with cream and sugar, two slices of buttered toast and a cup of half milk and half coffee. The oniy time or tne day when he eats meat Is at dinner, his menu being usual ly roast beef, potatoes, vegetables, stale bread and butter and rice pudding for dessert. For fear of Indigestion he never dares touch pastry. Before re tiring at night Donovan eats a pint bowl of bread and milk. Into which he stirs a tablespoonful qt butter. Tha milk, he contends, has a soporific ef fect. . He is very obstemious in his habits, and though not strictly a temperance advocate, he claims he has no need of simulants, and very rarely touches even a glass of beer. However, he smokes a pipeful of cut plug religiously four i.u.o o. unj, uuub aiier juncneon and three times after dinner. He drinks an average of three quarts of water a day, and to this habit he gives credit for a large share of his health DEBATING SQUAD OF M'MINNVILLE (Special Dispatch to The Journal.) McMinnvllle.
