Cap tain Bruin was forced to admit that he v had detailed two men to watch Lewis' place for It months and that they had found nothing against the man or his place. ' . Where the charges against Lewis came from is hard to determine, but It la said that he would never have been hauled upon the carpet but for spite ' work on the part of certain members of the detective department. It waa while hearing teatlmony In the Lewis case that the question of allowing womeq In saloons waa revived. - Lewis declared the only -women who came Into his place Were a few German women who visited his saloon to buy beer occasionally.- When asked if he i. was willing to abolish women from sa loons Lewis said the quicker such a rule was put in force the better he would be pleased. . SOLD AND RECOMMENDED BY ALL DRUUGISTS MOSER HANDED Carreno, Who Wielded the Baton After Revolutionists Had Captured Regular Conductor. Carreno, who will give one of her fa mous recitals at the Marquam theatre Monday evening, February 8, In the Lois Bteers-Wynn Coman series, has had a life full of such experiences as rarely fall to the lot of woman, and she has enjoyed, during her artistic career, aa much variety of work as can be imag ined. At one time it fell to her to direct a aeries of performances of grand opera, for which she had no previous experience. Carreno waa born In Venezuelan and they are exceedingly proud of her down there, aa well they may be. Ha the requeat of the nation, compoaed the national anthem, Carreno was Invited to Venesuela to attend the Bolivar cpin. bratlon as guest of the state. She waa met at the boundary with bands and military processions, and. on arriving, waa given the freedom of the city, pre sented by the mayor with appropriate ceremonies. Of course there were Car reno concerts which were nlaved to packed nouses, and the intervals between these were diversified by social func tions of a distinguished nature. Unfortunately just at the beginning of the opera seaaon. the blithesome Venesuelans decided to Inaugurate one of their periodical revolutions. Barrels of gunpowder designed to blow up the president of the republic, and the con ductor of the National Opera, were found under the opera house, and thla unkind Intention created quite a bit of evcuemeni. Although there was not another corV ductor within several thousand miles the poor leader was packed off in hurry ,and no spot enough obscure i hide the president, a most spectacular personage, being found, he was per suaded to remain and take his chances. Presidents are more common than con ductors, and the opera house was in t tumult until the first violinist sue gested that Carreno take up the baton and conduct. - T ... . r. ..... fc "en a uroriaiw vane, rm .iicuv. with her usual magnificent disregard of rates, consented and led the orchestra ror three weeks, and also with tremen dous success. At the end of this tln the turbid revolutionists turned their enthusiastic attention to other members of the nobility, and the president and conductor were again launched upon the high tide of social and political favor. Carreno, quite naturally, regards her experience aa an operatic conductor among her most Interesting reminis cences. The recital here will occur Monday evening, February S, at the Alarruam theater, and the seat sale for It opens next Friday morning, January ii, ai iv o ciock. to do. It is not believed, however, that the proprietors of the Pup saloon. Third and Jefferson streets, will get off so easily. All the evidence was not com pleted in this case yesterday. The place Is -said - to be a disorderly one and to cater to women. Police officers testified to the proprietors having been arrested and fined $55 for selling liquor to a woman under 21 years of age. Members of the committee received quite a shock when Captain Bruin told them that these were not the pnly cases he had for them to hear, but added that he did not Intend to file charges against the others until he saw how the mem bers acted on the present ones. In other words he told the members that If they allowed these cases to go by without penalising the offenders; he would consider It useless to prosecute the others. His' declaration caused a smile to flit around the long table. SECOHOJEMON Turned Down as Candidate by City and County Re publican Committee. Gus C. Moeer was turned down by a vote of 10 to 6 at a meeting of the members of the committeemen of the city and county Republican central com mittee of the Eighth ward last night. The meetlpg was held in the office ol R. C. Wright in the Dekum building. When the Moser resolution waa called up it provoked a great deal of discus mon, but at the wind up it was decide! to stand by tho action taken a short time agoand accordingly Mr. Moser's candidacy for the nomination for dis trict attorney was opposed. Because of the strictures passed upon tho action of the ward committee at the last meeting of the combined committee the members of the ward organization now aay they will stand by their guns and carry the controversy up to the other committee if the point Is again raised. In connection with tho refusal of the Eighth ward committeemen to indorse Moser it has developed that Frank 8. Bennett, a member of the council, is also In the race for district attorney and is expecting the support of the com mitteemen from the Eighth ward. Bennett waa elected to the council from the Eighth ward. Up to a short time before the last election he had of flcea In the Mohawk building but moved to the east side. Because of this move he gained a great deal of support from the residents of the east side of the river which he would not otherwise have had. Eli P. Clark, who Is building the Mount Hood electric railway from Port land to Bull Run, has begun construc tion at Los Angeles of one of the most remarkable tunnels on the western con tinent It will be a four-track electric railway tunnel, a little more than nine miles long, extending under the city of Los Angeles and giving an outlet for the beach lines of the Los Angeles & Pacific railway system. The tunnel will cost t4.000.000. The company's present fast line be tween Los Angeles, Santa Monica and other beaches makes the trip one way In 26 minutes. The distance is 19 miles. A Los Angeles man can reside at his seashore home and attend to business In the city as conveniently as can the Sellwood resident who works downtown in Portland. The trip between Los Angelea and Santa Monica is retarded by the neces sity for running trains slowly through the city, and the lost time has to be made up by the run south after passing the Junction of the Sherman line branch to the oil fields. This junction la about eight miles out from the city. In seeking a direct outlet from the city the company was confronted by a high hill that skirts the city limit and Incloses it like a Chinese wall on that side. The company determined to tun nel under this hill, when tn levels were taken It waa found that the to pography would permit continuing the tunnel several miles, ine opportunity to stay underground waa seised by the hundreds of now holds gates of nay If It wants to run its cars loo miles an hour The tunnel will be extended a dis tance of more than nine miles, with four separate car tracks, by which It is not cas nlcloal trenched with the politicians of the warci committee who are planning to in dorse his candidacy as soon as It is officially announced.
