' THE OREGON ' DAILY;. JOURNALJ.! PORTLAND.;; FRIDAY EVENING, J OCTOBER 4, 1907. M 13 iui f .i "EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IT" - - A ICS c I FOUND IH STATE No Development of Industry in Oregon, Although the Price of Ore Goes Up. 'COUNTRY AT LARGE PRODUCED 928 TONS Small Output AVaa Valued at Over (300,000 Colorado Furnjuhed Largest Offering This Year Min eral Comet From All Over. Wtihlnjton Bnrn of Tb Joarnil.) Washington, Oct. 4. Tungsten or tungstla , add Is found In Oregon, but bo far there has been no development of the Industry there. In 1906 In the country at large 92S tons were pro duced, valued nt 1349,000. The noticeable rise In the price of tungsten during 1005 continued during 1906, and the production waa stimu lated acocrdlngly. There waa, however, a very great discrepancy In the prices r'ald for ore In various placea, aa thore s almost suru to be when an article la produced spasmodically In widely sona rs toil and often little known localities, while at the same time the market Is limited and the Isolated small producers have slight rhanco to become ac quainted with buyers and market con ditions. Prices during the year ranged from $6 to 19 per unit for the con tained tungsten trloxlde or, aa it ia often called, "tungstk; aold." The mar. ket for tungsten ores Is expanding and teems now to be almost as sure as the market for copper or other ataple orea. Firms requiring large quantities of tungsten have had difficulty In obtain ing sufficient suppliea to guarantee fu ture deliveries. Colorado Took Lead. The greatest producing locality in 1906 was Boulder county. Colorado, but tungitm mining waa curried on also in California. Arizona, Montana, New Mexico and Washington. The Boulder county ore is wolframite, but the de poults In California ure chiefly scheel lte. No production of tungsten was re ported from the deposits In Alaska, Con necticut. Oregon or Idaho, but con siderable development work waa done at Osceola, Nevada. New deposits of scheeltte have also been found at Mur ray, Idaho, whero It Is hoped that pro duction will soon begin. During the year experiments that have been carried on for a long time produced a remarkable incandescent lamp, the filament of which Is made of metallic tungsten. The ordinary carbon incandescent lamp uses a large amount of electricity, while Its profitable life , is very short, and many attempts have been made to construct a lamp that would give better light with less power. 1 The Nernst lamp. the Cooper-HewlH j mercury vapor lamp, and the Moore ga lamp are the results of such attempts. I l hp lungsicn lamp promises to be as useful as any If not the most useful of all, but only a few lumps of this typo have yet been put on the market, as a number of details connected with the manufacture remain to be worked out. The lamp gives a brilliant white light of very pleasing quality, and possesses a distinct advantage in that, If prop erly made, It does not blacken the globe. Used for Plrrproof Cloth. Iarge quantities of sodium tungstate are manufactured, much of which Is said to be used in flreprooflng cloth for curtains, drapery. etc., and as a mordant In dyeing. Tungsten salts nra also extensively used in silk manufac ture, being added to the silk with the dye to give more apparent weight to the fabric. The production of tungsten In 1906 is reported by the United States geo logical survey In an udvance chapter from "Mineral Resources of the United States, Calendar Year 1906." by Frank L. Hess, geologist, In connection with statistics of production of certain of the rarer metals. KLAMATn CLAIMANTS RETURN HOME AGAIN Despite Immense Number Who Hushed Into the H1t Country There Was No Quarreling. (Special Dispatch to The Jour ml.) Klamath Falls, Or., Oct. 4. Several Klamath Falls people who took part in the timber rush in the Bly country have returned with Interesting reports of the cccnes enaclej there. It Is estimated that there were 2.000 people on the ground, and one party reports 1.000 peo ple In a radius of two miles of his camp. There were several locators for every claim, but, contrary to expectation, there waa no naa reeling shown, even the squatters who had gone In some time previous signifying their willingness to accept the result of the contest cases. At midnight the rush was made, with six inches of snow on the ground. Flreo were built on the claims, notices posted and a few logs set up as the rude be ginning of a cahln. In the' morning several of the claim ,. ants set out for the Lakeview land of- .flce, where thev will line up until Octo ber 28. when they will make filing, i A good many of the claims are of lit tle value, while others are good, but none are first-class homesteads; that is, good for agricultural land only. Some good quarter sections of timber will be secured. This land had been put into a tem porary reserve pending trie establish ment of a watershed lino by the re clamation service. LAND FRAUD CASES NEED APPROPRIATION (United Press Leased Wire.) Washington, Oct. 4. District Attor ney Baker will have postponed indeft nltely the Hyde-Benson-Diamond land fraud cases. He appeared before the district court here, saying the expense of $15,000 involved, which would include bringing witnesses from the Pacific coant. was Inconsistent with funds available. Funds on hand, he said, mado It impossible at this time for preparing ror trial. Hence tne necessity ror post ponement. The case has been set for trial Octo ber 21. before Judge Stafford, who last spring postponed It after witnesses had Deon brought rrom tne west, j ne argu ment for postponement was based on request for a change of venue, the alle gations being that prejudice would pre vent fair trials under existing circum stances. The court postponed the cases until after Christmas, when congress will be A HOST WORTHY ABTZCXB. Wheiran article has been on the mar ket for years and gains friends every year, it is safe to call this medicine a worthy one. Such is Ballard's Hore hound Syrup. It positively cures coughs and all pulmonary diseases. One of the best known merchants In Mobile, Ala bama, says: "For five years my family has not been troubled with the winter coughs, we owe this to Ballard' Horehound Syr up. I know It has saved my children from many sick spells." Bold by all druggists. t v,-- : v.-t zens. The slogans I suggest for East Portland are: "East Portland is Portland," "We don't cross the river for water," "East Portland is on the map," "We have it in East Portland," "East Portland is a go," "East Portland jumps by jumps," "The sun goes up in East Portland," "We'll meet in East Portland," "Good girls in East Port land," "Get married in East Portland," "Three cheers for East Portland," "You are welcome in East Portland." I do not wish any prize for above suggestions, but if East Portland will adopt my favorite slogan, viz.: "We drink 'Golden Grain Granules' in East Portland," then I shall give 1,000 sample packages free. In every package is health; with health comes happiness and wealth. Oregonians are loyal to Golden Grain Granules. EVERY PACKAGE OF GOLDEN GRAIN GRAN ULES IS NEARLY TWO POUNDS.
