THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL; PORTLAND. FRID AY EVENING, i OCTOBER r 4, 1007. IS . TODAY'S MARKETS Ten-Cent If ops Now Reality Dealers Ray They Were Forced to Pay Iliffher Prices by Journal's Agitation. , HAY PRICE WEE BIT EXCITED Supplies Everywhere Arc Short and Higher Trices Ruling in the JIarlvet. Front street features: Hay market Is excited. Barley la hard to got. leniand for rye la good. Wheat demand la active. Flour la very firm. Chicken market still dull. Car watermelons from south. I'otato market Is Inactive. Growers able to hold onions. Apple demand Is better. Hop's moving at higher figures. Lressed meats are very high. W.T ltrkt Is Excited. Dealera In hay are much excited theae days on account of the very small offer ings and the enormous demand for the product at this time. Receipts thus far this season have been very small and the trade has been forced to raise prices on Itself In order to encourage the producer to let go. Prices are higher at this time than they have been for several years at this period of the sea son. The short crop In the Willamette valley this year Is one of the principal causes for the advance, but the higher cost In other feeds has aided the ad vancing market on hay. For fancy val ley timothy the dealers here are quite willing to pay producers xi ana lis a ton, some Hales being made at both figures. At this time eastern orego fancy timothy Is quoted very strong at $18 and $19 a ton, but dealers here will take all offerings at the moment at these figures; providing, of course, they are assured of early delivery. Even the cheaper grades of local huy, cheat, grain and clover are today selling to dealers at $12 and $13 a ton. Reports from up the valley state that there Is very liable to he a famine In the hay market there this winter, be cause supplies are about the smallest In years. Coarse drains Bale Vry High. Very high values are today ruling In the coarse grain . markets, owing to the unusually heavy demand that Is now ruling1 In all parts of the Pacific coast, us well as east of the Rockies. For oats there Is the best demand In years No. 1 milling Is bringing In most In stances a higher value than No. 1 white. Iealers are today offering producers as high as 2o.50 und -b a ton for No. white and 60c a ton less for the gray. Barley demand Is likewise the greatest In years, uusiness rrom ine souin Increasing at a lively rate and dealera are therefore offering higher values In order to nil their reaulrements. mustuffs and Wheat rlrm. Thc mlllstuff market is likewise un usually firm, the sharp advance quoted the oilier day being very easily main talned at all coast points. According to millers, tne demand Is still grealf than the supply, even at the higher prices. For wheat there continues very heavy business at primary points. Sales In the Walla Walla section are the heavl est of the season, growers there being of the opinion that the present market Is very close to the top, if not already there. Practically all the business now reported in the wheat market here and elsewhere In the I'nited States Is for the l"nlted Kingdom. r While the flour market is steady, there i not much doing In an oriental way. Local trade is very good. New flour Is coming on the market now and Is being quoled at the same figures as old grade However, there Is said to be considerable complaint as to quality. Brief Notes of the Trade, If anything, receipts of eggs are silently increased and the market is un changed at 32 4c for local ranch. Those talking S.'ic are generally rilled up with eastern stock and quote the higher price on locals in order to sell the foreign stuff Chicken market is still very dull and, while receipts are not bo heavy as they were a few days ago. stocks are still ac cumulating. Outside demand Is not 11b eral. Potatoes are very slow, no Outside business being reported during the past 24 hours. Local trade quiet at un changed values. Onion growers have succeeded in hold ing the market steady by keeping stocks at home Apple demand Is growing, but values are still the same. Grape market is still very low-priced, owing to the large supplies. A car of watermelons from Califor nia, probably the last of the season, came in this morning. A car of sweet potatoes came In yes terdnv. Another today. Dressed meat Is firmer with higher prices obtained in some Instances for fancy veal. Billy Dryer Returns. BIUv Dryer, of Dryer, Rollam & Co., returned from a vacation to the sound this morning. Mr. Dryer says the Port land market Is as good, If not better,, than those of the north, because there Is no Alaska business there at pres ent. "I thought we could sell the sound some grapes, but found," he says, "that the markets there were In worse shape than here, on account of the large sup pile from Yaktmn." TENrCENT HOrS ARE NOW A REALITY HERE Hops are selling quite lively these days and the price Is close to 10c. A number of sales wer reported -late yesterday and to day at 9c and 10c reports are coming more lively. While they are not .fully confirmed, the fact that a sale of Washlngtons has been made at that figure leads the trade to presume that the figure has been quietly paid on choice Oregons, which are al ways a cent or two better than Washlngtons. Harry L. Hart, one of the most prominent brokers of hops on the Pacific coast, said today thta there were a number of orders 1 nthe marr ket at 9fi)9c a pound. Mr. Hart himself purchased 113 bales yesterday at tc a pound. The car shortage continues to be the worst feature of the market. CORN Whole, $9; cracked, 120 ton. HARLKY New Feed. $24.00 & 24. "Poultry has had a very poor week, with large receipts on an already well-supplied market, and with but little call from out of town points. There has been a bet&r demand for fat hens than for springs, but a great deal of difficulty has been ex perienced in getting rid of ordi nary stocks. Ducks also have not been in any too much favor, but there is a good demand for geese and turkeys, both old and young It is. my opinion that with ordinary receipts there will be no Improvement In Conditions the coming, weak.
