Although many women have been "fans" for years, ability to criticise does' not always unfortunately con stitute also ability to dot Therefore, though the feminine "rooter" may be able to talk with an air of Infinite wisdom of "three-baggers" and "sac rifices," yet when she herself cornea to the bat, or takes first base, she may find her f hopelessly at sea If her vaunted learning be not supplemented by practical Instruction. To such a woman a knowledge of Aaseball technicalities will not, there fore, come far amiss, and may some day asslsN-who knows! In scoring a wonderful victory for the ladles' team I THE EQUIPMENT First, u word as to equipment Of course, there Is the regular catcher's outfit the maskrthe padded chest pro tector and the glove, all of which are as absolutely necessary as are the bat and balls. Sys tematically brush them morning and evening, and as they grow longer and new ones appear they will tend upward Instead of down. This is all you can really do with them. If they are suf ficiently long, you might fasten them with invisible hairpins. Perfectly Harmless Kindly republish your formula for liquid powder. 'Is it harmless for Ua face? The work was most negligently done, and serves as an example of the harm an Inexperi enced or criminally careless man can do. Most certainly a competent surgeon should be able eo remove hairs of the sort you mention. If you are dissatisfied, why do you not change physicians? Surely you are not now employing the same man who ruined your face with the X ray? Kindly give me also a bleach, which will also soften the hands and arms during the summer months. Mrs. E. S. M. . I am giving you formulas for both freckles and blackheads. The latter is not, of course, to be used regularly, but only once or twice until the blackheads are removed. After washing and dry ing the hands and arms, rub a little of this mixture Into them. Use My Formula Some weeks ago I saw a remedy for dandruff, the formula for which was as fol lows: Tincture of canthaiides t ounces Glycerine , 1 ounce Oil of rosemary ., 1 ounce I had It filled, but the druggist seemed to think three ounces ot cantharides was very strong, and asked me If It was to be diluted with water when used. Is there anything 'n It to cause aheedache, or will It affect tht head In any way? After the preparation Was put up. oil was floating on the top . I agree with the druggist that the proportion of cantharides seems too t great. Try this formula of mine in- ' stead: To Remove Dandruff. After all this preparation, it may seem rather an anti-climax to say that it is here Impossible to give all or any of the technical rules and directions of baseball. However, there are guides and compendlums. published almost by the hundred, and in any of these milady of the diamond will find regulations a-plenty. All I would urge her to do la to make herself thoroughly familiar with what ever text book she may select. It is not baseball for four or five persons on a aide to run to bases and back, occasion ally ajid accidentally catching a ball; neither Is It baseball to crowd a field with twenty or twenty-five excited wo men, wildly endeavoring to get out of one another's way, and Incidentally making spectacles of themselves. Not that you will play always or often In publlo, but It Is well to make one rule throughout, and, if you are goiftg to do the thing at all. to do It right. Even In the private games, which are one of the finest exercises known, you will derive much more benefit by ad hering to rules and acting in a sane and sensible manner than If you played "not wisely, but too well." And baseball Is a glorious exercise. The running with head well up, chest Some Aids to Correspondents A Wonderful Cream I AM a housewife and do most of my work, and as I run out with hands partly Wet and partly dry, they will get rough, and my face aa well. Then, when I want to go to a reception or the theater, they are red and unpleasant looking. A friend told me you gave her a formula for a cream which made her face and hands look nice, white, left not an oily, bus a soft, velvety feeling, and looked well the next day. It did not rub off. like powder. Could you help me out and give me something as good? My friend has lost the formula and cannot tell what was In It. I enjoy your columns very much, and am sorry t missed the paper you had this formula In. It was a cream or liquid that gave the face and hands a white and soft look, and kept the skin from getting chapped or sunburned. A PATIENT WAITER. If I ever recommended a cream that had all the wonderful qualities you mention. It developed them without my knowledge. The best 1 can do Is to give you a good cream, and to tell you the names of a few more, so that- per haps you will recognize it by that and write to me again for It. Was It rose cream, honey and almond, cucumber, lotion of lavender flowers, old-fashioned skin lotion, Kentucky cold cream, boro glycerine cream Jelly? I am afraid that this Is , the best I can do for you. I know the following cream to be good, and It will probably prove satisfactory, even If it Is not tbe one of which you speak: Witch Hazel Cold Cream. White wax t ounce Spermaceti 1 ounce Oil ot almonds M pint Melt: pour Into a mortar which has been heated by being Immersed some time In boiling water. Very gradually add three ounces of rosewater and one ounce of witch hazel, and assiduously stir the mixture un til an emulsion Is formed, and afterward1 until the mixture Is nearly told. A Case of Acne I am young girl of Just 1 years and am greatly trouoiea with blackheads and pimples on my forehead. At present, I am using a facial soap and cream. The result is that my roreneaa looks at times as though it was filled with extra dry black heads, but on a close examination It is readily found that they are only small, dry pimples. CITY IRL. From your description, I think It very probable that you are suffering from confluent acne. In this case, observe the strictest personal cleanliness and care of the face, and use twice a day the following: Cure for Confluent Acne (Monin's). Powdered alum 20 grains Oxide of alnc 76 grains Tincture ot green soap 2i drams Glycerine 10 drams Rub well in with a soft cloth. Hips and Eyebrows Kindly tell ma whether one can reduce the else of one's hips. If not. will you please give ma a formula to reduce fat? Kindly give me, also, something to grow and darken the eyebrows and eyelashes. READER. Most certainly, one can reduce the slse of one's hips. I am giving you Several exercises by which it may be done. I do not think the use of a . pomade to reduce fat will be necea- aary. t To Reduce th Hips. Hera are several other exercises that are axcellent hip-reducers: Al. Bring i tha knee ud to tha chest remain- tax perfectly erect. Practice In alternate mireraents. i Place hands on Btps. shoulders well back. Raise the leg, with knee flexed, and 2-lvit a high, quick aids kick, bringing the ooi tack agsia to the floor. , Repeat tea out and abdomen in. benefits the lunga greatly by the Influx of oxygen it brings, and la likely, too, to reduce superfluous flesh, though the really stout woman la, of course, out of place on the diamond. The stretching to catch develops the cheat and shoulders, and the stooping and bending are good to strengthen the sides, back and abdo men. Even the neck and throat, and most of all the arms and legs, are developed, and the muscles strengthened and hard ened. The game la a prime Inducement to grace also. Unconsciously one learns to run, to reach, to pitch, to catch, with less and less awkwardness and clumsi ness, until at last It becomes almost a sort of rhythmic drill. In which each muscle 'and sinew knows Its work and responds easily and quickly to the stim ulus of the mind. Then, and then only, does baseball become not only Intense ly Interesting and exciting, but health ful, beautiful and beauty making. PROTECTING THE HANDS ' Of course, there are drawbacks even In the "Incomparable game." If you are not careful, the hard ball It Is Im possible to play correctly with anything but the regulation variety will callous or skin the hands, but the wearing of a proper glove and, better still, the ac quiring of knowledge of the right way to hold the hand for catching, so that the ball will not rebound against a rigid surface, but will be clasped and held tightly, will prevent either of these annoyances. Again, In sliding, you must be pre pared to soil and tear your clothes, and sometimes to cause some minor injury, but It la not likely that anything seri ous will happen, and, after all. It all comes In the game. Above all, do not lose your temper. Women are usually poor opponents be cause they take evidence of superior skill or even the results of mere chance as personal affronts. It Is quite pos sible that the captain of the opposing team may be your most intimate friend and yet work hard and devoutly for the success of her side, and the umpire may times, first with the right foot, then with the left. I. Take standing position, hands on hips, and rotate the hlpa. bending the knees and keeping the chest and shoulders Immovable. Contract all the muscles us.d In this exer cise and resist. Bonding exercises also are good. The next exercise Is highly recommended by one who has had much experience in giving and directing exercises for tbe im provement of bodily symmetry. She states that it has reduced the hips two inches in a month. Lie extended on the floor, sup porting one'e self by one hand, while the other Is placed upon the hip. While hold ing this position, raise the body gradually from the floor until the whole weight la supported by the hand and feet. It is com paratively easy to get the body from the floor as far aa the knees, but to bring It up to the full extent Just described Is not easy at first. It should be tried first on one side and then on the other. Finally, the following exercise. If perse vered with, will reduce flesh round the hips: First, raise the outstretched arms above the head, the body retaining Its erect position; then bend slowly forward from the waist, so that the Angers come as noar touching tbe floor as possible, without straining In any way. This Is done with out bending the knees. In recovering posi tion, let the arms relax and sink down as the body straightens up. Second, with hands placed lightly on the hips, the Angers pointing forward, let the body drop forward easily, so that it Is bent at the waist. This must be done gently as by Jerking more harm than good Is done. From this bent position roll the body round to the right, counting four for It to reach the position of being bent over tne siae: tnen to me oacx, being careful to do It very easily at first, till the muscles have gained strength, for an exaggeration of the movement may cause real pain. Then on the left, and back to the front. Practice again, only start toward the left. The waist acts as a pivot on which the trunk swings, and the head is easily relaxed. Third, in this exer cise the hands have the game position, but now the body Is bent forward from the waist, then back, then to the right and left Each movement should occupy four counts. Take these exercises gently, but let the movements be firm and strong. Avoid the slightest strain of the muscles. No corsets should be worn while practicing them. Do you not think that among all these you will be able to find one to benefit you? I am giving you also formulas for an eyebrow and eyelash stain and a grower.
