HIS POSITION Ellis G. Hughes and other, who are advocating the laying of aspha.t pave ment in the Irvlngton district Instead of bitulithic, will continue their fight for the asphalt on the remaining streets to be improved, despite the fact that the executive board awarded contracts to pave six of the streets with I tullthic . last Friday afternoon. - In a lengthy communication to The Journal Hughes maintains that paving companies nave noming in tne contro versy save as it mav serve their own i interests ana mat me property o vners i re actuated by uielr belief that asphalt says If there Is any fight on It Is bo- tween the Irvlngton property owners and the city council or members there , of, and there Is absolutely no way In which any paving company could be come party to it save through members of the council. In support of his contention he cites that he owns all of the Dronertv nf- fected south of Knott street and one third of all that north of that street and will be compelled to pay the bills in that proportion. He asserts that this Is sufficiently evident that he is acting in his own interest and that all of the other property owners are in the same poslton. Orlglnaly, Hughes explains, Boston Parties and himself desired to have he whole tract improved ith hard surface pavement and filed petitions covering a greater part of the district. In all over 20,200 lineal feet. The two parties, however, could notJ agree on the character of pavement aind the Bos tonlans filed petitions for S.bSO lineal feet for bitulithic. Hughes petitioned for bituminous macadam, showing 6,000 llenal feet that desired This was last winter, but two weeks ago the Boston owners sold out their entire holdings In Irvlngton district and It waa at this time that the property owners expressed a desire for uniform pavement says Hughes. The latter ex plains that he had not at first peti tioned for asohalt on account nt it cost and the fact that he could not se cure a uniform pavement for the whole and did not deem it advisable to go to the expense of only putting it fn in fiart. When the opportunity offered o put It In in the entire district Hughes said he readily consented to the change from bituminous macadam to asphalt and will continue to urge that it be HUGHES EXPLAINS GRANGE HOLDS ICE CREAJJ SOCIAL Russellvllle Grange No. 353 held its third social for the season last evening.
