tha coroner was notified. A bruise on
' tha chest of the remains seemed to

Indications seemed to show that
Flaherty may bays been overcome by
cramp.
Flaherty resided at tha Commercial
hotel, but boarded with hla relatives at

Flaherty, tha father. Is the coaat rep

Field company of Philadelphia, one of
the largest wholesale dry goods dealera
In tha United States. The details of
th tragedy were communicated to the
grief atrlcken parent at Seattle last
night by telephone and he immediately
boarded a train for this city.
J. J. Flaherty, a well-known liquor
dealer at Seventh and Washington
streets. Is a cousin of the dead boy.
Young Flaherty was well and favorably
known and was held in the highest
esteem "by his employers.

Ellis G. Hughes and other, who are
advocating the laying of aspha.t pave
ment in the Irvlngton district Instead

for the asphalt on the remaining streets
to be improved, despite the fact that
the executive board awarded contracts
to pave six of the streets with I tullthic

Journal Hughes maintains that paving

in that proportion. He asserts that this
Is sufficiently evident that he is acting
in his own interest and that all of the
other property owners are in the same
poslton.

cure a uniform pavement for the whole
and did not deem it advisable to go to

from bituminous macadam to asphalt

ANOTHER PIONEER
CALLED TO REST
J, X. Howlett, Who Crossed Plains
In 18M, Passed Away at
University Park.
J. N. Howlett. a pioneer of 1SB1, died
at the home Of hla daughter, Mrs.
Powell, at University Park, yesterday
morning, after a ahort Illness. When
12 months old deceased started across
the plains for Oregon with his mother
and father and several sisters and
brothera. On the Journey hla father
and mother died, leaving him and his
sisters and brothers to th charity of
others on the trail.
William Howlett, a brother. Is now
the onlv surviving member of the fam
ily that started across the plains with
the new spirit that aided them to con
quer the frontier. J. N. Howlett, how
ever, leaves eight children.
For 40 years Mr. Howlett had lived at
Eagle Creek, Oregon, moving to Portland
a few years ago to make hla home with
his daughter. He waa born in Jennings
county, Indiana, In 1860.
The latest political rumor has it that
Mr. Roosevelt would be pleased to seo
Governor Hughes of New York nom
inated for the vice-presidency next year
with Secretary Taft, of course, at th
hend of the ticket.
