Is Constantly Looking for Suit able Theme During Tour of United States. '.., Leoncavallo Is ambitious to writs an opera on an American theme. Through out hla Amerloan tour ha has been con stantly on the lookout for a good theme and. setting for such an operavand it Is said that this was the primary reason for his accepting the ' Invitation to America this season. Kls operas have not all been laid In hla native country so far, and his adaptability to foreign scenes snd foreign spirit was shown when, at the request of the German emperor, he wrote "Roland do Berlin.' In that work he ahows hla deep sym pathy with, and respect for, Wagner. In connection with Leoncavallo's coming appearance here great curiosity has been awakened about La, Scale, the Royal theatre of Milan, where the cele brated composer Is conductor of the orchestra. Teatro della Bcala, which has played a larga part In tha musical history of Europe, la the largest In Italy. On the destruction by Are of the Royal Ducal theatre In 177 the new theatre was built by the order of Em press Maria Theresa. Tha alts chosen was that of an ancient church, "Santa Marie delle Scale.- The cost of '1.000. 000 lire, about $100,000, was sustained by the boa-holders, who bad supported thS building of the new theatre,, repre senting the aristocracy of Milan. In 1807 tha theatre iras renovated, the most famous palavers of Italy distin guishing themselves In the decoration. Although the stage fixings are famous for their beauty, and tha bouse Itself Is a study In rlchnesa and taetej though thS orchestra " can boaat of being one of the finest In the world, yet the real glory of the theatre lies In ths singers that have sung themselves to undying, rams mere anu a temple or art. It Is the dream of all singers to reach at some time in their career ths wonderful La BcsJa.-.--- - c And It la ths orchestra from this wonderful theatre that will appear hers with Leoncavallo next Monday afternoon and evening, giving excerpts from Pag llaocl, Zasa, Boheme, Chatterton, Ro tTanaKnd Msfllul. besides ths new Ave Msrla dedicated to the pops, .- hit uarnrsBT ow basts.
