Anyway, there la no disgrace attached to being- last at the finish of a contest that endured through fourteen long pasma and wound up with a display of fireworks that would have relegated a Chinese New Year celebration to the Shadows of oblivion. The acore was 3 to i In favor of Spo kane, but the score was only a trivial Incident of the game Itself. The man who draws a salary from Manager Grim for painting figures on a board in Imitation of the result of in nlngs, ran out of blackboard space and. after puszllng for a length of time that nearly drove the audience Wild with ap prehension, began all over again and wrote figures Inside of those already constructed. The crowd had faint vis ions between Innings vf vanishing sup pers and scoldings waiting at the end of the return Journey, but while the Innings themselves were In progress there was no time for visions the peo ple were too busy watching the game. The contest was aa full of heart throbs as a love match In Zanzibar, and from the time the first ball was pitched Until "Dig" Elsey smashed out the wln- tdng single In the fourteenth Inning, it was touch and go with both sides. The grand climax of public feeling Was reached In the thirteenth, when, af ter Spokane had landed two voyageurs In safety on the rubber. Portland suc ceeded In populating the pillows with two gone. Everything hinged on the ability of Ielnol to translate Dammon's delivery and he translated and tied the score. "Tacks" Parrot made two splendid thrown in from left field that cut off set tlers at the plate. The cleverest bit of fielding was done by Gus Klopf In the ninth, when he pulled himself tip by his boot-ears and dragged down a hard line hit, which was ticketed through to the fence. A father and two sons is a combination hard to beat. especially when the father is a railroad contractor, one son his foreman, and the other the manager of tlie family em ployment bureau. This particular combination was char acterized by Labor Commissioner Grout this morning as one of the most Iniqui tous and nefarious schemes to defraud laboring men that has been uncovered ' in this state. David Swank Is the father and rail road contractor. He has the contract j for resurfacing and double-tracking the Seattle & Ronton Railway Company's ; line between Seattle and' Renton. O. E. 1 Swank, one of the sons. Is his foreman : of construction work. The other son, j F. D. Swank, has charge of the Western ( Employment Office at 123 Second avenue t soutn. The Scheme to defraud laboring men. as said to be worked by the members of this triple alliance. Is thus described by Mr. Grout: "About ten days ago complaints be gan coming in about the action of the contractors In charge of the work on I the Renton line and also against fhe Western Employment Agency. The com plaints came from worklngmen who claimed to have been duped by the con tractor and employment agent. They stated that when a man applied at the Job for work he was sent by the fore man in charge to the Western Employ, ment Agency off! cos. There he was forced to give up $1.60 to secure the Job sought for. it ''After going to work the man might be kept a day or possibly several, day and would then he told that he was In competent toshoveI dirt and would be discharged. His hoard was then de ducted from the small amount of wages I ' rfffTL'l Of Electric Appliances should recommend them to everyone for use in business or in the home.
