SAXjpOBT 8EASOBT OPENS. The spring open season for al mon Ashing on the Columbia River and tributaries opened last evening; at midnight. is At midnight the open Beaton fftr sal mon In Oregon water commenced and this morning the local markets are well . - Supplied with the delirious Royal Chinook. The catch during the night Was considered quite large by fishermen snd Indications now point to an Increase of about one-third In the catch over that Of last year. Today's price on Chinook Stands at 8 cents a pound. California Stock has about disappeared from the local markets. Ssaa Price Are. Pinner. AH grades of beans are firmer In price today and there Is a likelihood of nn arty advance all along the line. Bayous Uid mall white are especially active. Steamer to ArriT. The) California steamer Is due this Ivenlng from San Francisco with the lauai cargo of assorted vegetables and mall fruits. Thre car of bananas, two of oranges and one car of lemons were the rail re eelpts from the South today. Another Car of fancy oranges Is due this evening. Bananas, although more liberal In re ceipt, arc selling well at advanced quo tations on account of a former short ire. Art) Tickle's Coffee tower. The quotations on Arbuckle's coffee tre down an eighth cent today on ac count of the opening nf lake navigation. - The change In price Is not due to any market fluctuation but to the cheaper freight rate now prevailing. Today's quotations Rre 111.12 1-2 a hundred Lion and other brands of package cof foes are unchanged. Pork More Plentiful. There was a more plentiful supply of fresh pork in the markets along Front street today but nil stock received was cleaned up at prevailing quotations Beef receipts are still too light and With the current heavy demand prices are up to the top notch. Eggs Are Slow Sellers. The egg market la quiet today, re ceipts not being quite so liberal as they were yesterday. There Is plenty of stock In the local markets, however, to supply all demands, which, at present Im very light. Large retailers who usu ally buy a half dozen cases at one time now only purchase enough stock to tide them over from day to day In the ex pectation of a further break In the mar get. Single case orders are filled to day at 16 cents, but for the larger orders the price hovers around the 15 1-2 cent mark. Ths Poultry Situation. Receipts of poultry are not so lrge a they have been and commission men are experiencing no difficulty In dispos ing of all arrivals at the prevailing quo tations. Pionlo Hama Are Higher. The t'nlon Meat Company announces n advance of a half cent In Its quotn lons on picnic hams Other packed neata are slow sellers at published quo atlons. but leading packers now predict t change In the near future. Although log prices are not quite so stiff In the fiast at present. It Is not the price of lvestock that controls the packed meat flotations so much as it is the receipts 2onst receipts if hogs are small and prices are showing a decided upward tendency. I.ard of both the IochI and Eastern brands is unchanged in price. Hops Are Moving-. That some of the larger Eastern hop rokers are convinced that the price of lops during the coming season will not 3e so low as formerly, a large number f them are now m"klng contracts for (he JAiiS crop in the Valley at 15 1-2 and 1C cents a pound. Sales of the 1902 s are still small but :i better fcellnK pre vails throughout the markets of the country. European advices tell of a livelier tone prevailing in these mar kets'. Prices are unchanged. Butter Drop Will Come. Theie is no doubt that the quotations in tlic very best grades of local cream ery butter will show a decline within (he next few iia . s The warmer weath er is having .1 tendency to make vast increase.-- in tie receipts and all the narket ;,Te plentifully Mipplled nith loci) m, i, ( Todays i jui.n a ,ns. an revised, arc as follows: erel. The State Land Board, at Its regular meeting held yes terday afternoon, opened bids for two sections of school land, advertised to be sold. The lands in question were sections 16 and 86. township 15 south range 3 east, in Linn County, recently surveyed and the plats filed. The prices realized set the high water mark In the sale of school land, the state profiting greatly by this method of selling school lands. Section 1 was sold to W. J Morrison and Flnley Morrison, each tak ing 320 acres, at $14.27 1 1-32 per acre, the next highest bid for the property being I8.R1. J. W. Shumate secured the north hulf of Bectlon 3G Mi $3.65 per acre, and M. Hteusnauser purcnaseu me north half of the south half of section 36. nt $1.30 an acre. The remainder or section 36 was not sold, no bids having been received for it. Formerly school lands were sold at $1.26 per. acre but since the board has Inaugurated the system of advertising for bids better prices are realized, and the school fund Is greatly benefited thereby. The purchasers of the lands are required to pay one-fifth of the pur chu.se nrlce at once, one-fifth in one yeur at 8 per cent interest, one-fijth in two years at 7 per cent, and the remainder ut longer time at 6 per cent, rrom special wire and cables to Bolton, ds muyter k Co. CHICAGO, April 15 The Record- Herald suys:. The present firmness of corn Is supposed to be due in part to a situation which exists at Buffalo. It Is said two of the elevator concerns here. Counselman and Armour, made liberal hedges In the Buffalo market Instead of putting out their sales for May here at the time when It looked as If there might ).' n May corner deal In this market. The Buffalo market Is apparently some thing like the New York market In one particular. If the Buffalo people want the corn on their contracts It goes through nil right. But If for any rea son Buffalo does not want corn. It is rather uncertuin whether Its Inspection department will consider the grain gooil enough to suit. The Buffalo May sell- ng was done when the spread between Chicago and that market wis inviting nnd It Is said almost i.OOO.nno bushels whs put out there (in a ir.irket as nil us' Buff-'.lo the only thing for the hlcngo people to do is to send grnln down there tlmt will suit It would not be comforttble to try to take the May In The lending exporter at New York. Fowler. Is credited with the marking up of New York and St Louis May prices yesterday, the move which caused the closing strength Ip the wheat here It Is said that Fowler has been buying the deferred futures In the chief winter wheal markets and offering wheat for new crop shipment abroad on the basis of these purchnses. The effect yeter dnv was to Increase the Mav premium at New York over the Chicago by 1-2 cent nnd to lessen the discount at St 1 ouls under Chicago by 14 cent New York May closed 3 3-8 cents over the Chicago, compared with 3 cents over the (bty previous and St. Louis closed 7 1-f cents under Chicago. compared with 7 3-s cents the day previous There Is an Idea In the trade that the next thlrg In wheat will be an Improvement In the outside prices, while the Chicago mar ket is simply held steady. The leading onts Interests still appear to be bearish and they claim the May is high, because (he No. 4 white can be bought and turned In ns standard at profit. It takes a mon with a mixing house, however, to know from day to day that the May price is high or low compared with the cash markets. The No. 4 white oats cover a wide range from 2S cents to 34 1-2 cents and nobody but the man with the mixing machinery can tell hist whnt price has to be paid for the No 4 white which run be turned into, stan dard. If It should be 34 1-2 cent oatH the May price would certainly be cheap, but if it should be the 2-cent, the May price would certainly be high. It Is not everybody who can decide this nice question. I Do not take, chances on it wearing away or experiment with some unknown preparation which will only half cure it at best, and leave the bronchial tubes and lungs weakened and susceptible to attack from the germs of Consumption. MC1V AM ra not only stops the cough but heals and strengthens the lungs and pre vents serious results from a cold. It Saved His Ufa After the Dootor Said He Had Consumption. W. R. Davis, Vissalia, California, writes: "There is no doubt but what FOLEY'S HONEY AND TAR saved my life. I had an awful cough on my lungs and the doctor told me I had consumption. I commenced taking FOLEY'S HONEY AND TAR and found relief from the first and three bottles cured me completely. FELL INTO CREEK. (Journal Special Service.) SALEM, April IB. Johnny Lewis, one if the Journal carriers, had a narrow scape from a watery grave last night. While riding his bicycle across the North Mill Creek bridge on Liberty street, he lost control of his wheel, and fell into the stream, and but for timely assistance given him by a couple of passing pedfstrians. would have lost his life. April IB Waldorf Hotel Notes: It Is Impossible to accurately estimate the total purchases of stocks by Investors In the past two days, but some verv conservative observers be lieve that at least 200,000 shares have been paid for and taken out of the street.
