Fearful of her mother's anger at the refusal of the butcher and the grocer to trust her- for articles she was sent affer, eleven year old Louise Jansen made an attempt to end her life last night thinking that would be , the easiest way out of her troubles. Fro mthe counter at which she food when refused, ' the little ehild took a piece of brown wrapping paper and hastily ssribhled a note to her mother telling her that she was dead, and that she was very sorry thereat. She said that she did it be cause the butcher and the grocer would not trust her for the things she was sent after and that she was bad, she knew, but hoped her mother would forgive her. After handing the note to the grocer with a request to have it delivered to her mama, the child hastily swallowed the remain der of the contents of the ink bottle the grocer had provided her with. Carrying a message of good will from .Mayor McClcllan to Mayor Bsse of Chic ago, the. start of the longest cross country relay race ever held will be made this; morning from City Hall Park. Bovs from 15 to 20 years will make uo the' team which will convey Got ham's message to hVr sister city in the Middle West. The boys are members of the Young Men's Chris- tion Asociation and! represent near ly every branch of the Association between the two cities. The message will be encased in a silver tube, which will be passed from one boy to another at the end of each rrfav. The youngster who receives the message will run up Broadway half a mile and deliver it to another with it. At that point another eager, fleet-footed youth will be waiting him. In this way the race will con tinue day and night until Chicago is reached. The boys will be accompanied by automobiles. LONDON, July 15. -The gold medals went to Great Britain, France and Sweden, as winners of the finals oi today's events at te Olympic gaiifcs. Great Britain was a double winner and France and Sweden each secured one first. The United States had to be satisfied with- only one silver medal, a syrnblic of second idace in the threc-tnilu team race. The American representation in the various event was however small.
