The Court reserv ing the right to reject any or all bids, I By order of the County Court, I J..C, CLINTON, Clerk. It Is Now Applied to the Most Danger' out Criminal! With Whom the Offl etn of the Law Have te 'Contend. Nitroglycerin in Safe Bursting. , In the expressive siting that per men tea police circles throughout the country, a "yegg" js One of the dan gerous criminal class. The question Is often asked, "What la a yegg, nod bow did the expression originate? An answer to the latter part of tho query will lead to an eluci dation of tho first Sdiiio yours ago, when tho United States government was experimenting with blgb explosives, wishing to secure some death dealing and destructive shell that would cnuse more damugu than any before manufactured, some one suggested that nitroglycerin be Mod. Up to that time this most pow erful of explosives bad not been util ised In tbla way. The government experts went to work, and the resulta of their expert mouts were from time to time pub lished broadcast through the commu nity, At lust they succeeded In mak ing a shell In which nitroglycerin was the chief component pert and which made all former ones sink Into Insig nificance. In a town in the middle west at the time there lived a man named John Tcgg. In bis earlier days be bad been one of tho most expert electricians as well as all round experienced mechan ics In the country. Later, through drink and bad associates, be bad descended to a Ufo of crime, bis principal art be ing that of safe blowing. lie wna attracted by the published accounts of tho experiments of the government authorities wltb nitro glycerin. The thought struck him. Why could not this bo used In blowing safes? The method at that time was to drill bole In the safe to be wrecked, fill this with powder or dynamite and then toucb the fuse. This method, however, required considerable time to pull off "a Job" and waa uolsy and dangerous. Yeg; went to work on the nitro glycerin method. lie tried It, and It was a complete success. Furthermore. sfter be bud performed Job after Job he bad the police of the country baf fled. They did not know 'bow the work ' was done. Yegg Instructed others In the art, and soon from one end of the country to the other safes were being wrecked, but by what man ner no one knew. Yegg's method waa to take some of tbe explosive which be and tbose wltb hliu called "soup"and, by the way. this term Is still extant and pour It tho crack of the safe near the nlngos of the door. Tbe small aperture waa then covered with soap to bold the explosive In place. Tbe fuse won pplled, and with tbe explosion off went the doors, slick and clean. Tbe entire Job took but a few minutes, it remained for a young Plnkerton de- ective to aolve the matter on a safe that was blown In Coldwater, Mich., where a bank was wrecked and many thousands of dollars secured. Tbe crime was traced to Yegg and some of his companions, and they were found guilty and sent to prison. Thereafter tbose who employed the nitroglycerin Instead of , the older methods were called "reggmen" or yeggs." This was the beginning of the term, but since that time tbe application of has grown greatly. Today a "yegg," lewed from whatcrer aspect, is the most dangerous criminal wltb whom the police of tho country have to deal. IIo Is one who rides the country o'er on freight trains, working through the south In tbe winter and mlgraUng to more exhilarating dimes during the summer. He will beg when be Is hungry and will steal and commit murder when ho sees an opportunity of benefiting himself Today there are thousands of "yeggs" scattered throughout the country. Most of them belong to some certain band, each one of which bas a leader. He Is the king. It Is bis duty to enlist recruits. To him also is shinned all the loot, and ho In turn converts It Into money ana places tbe amount to tbe credit of tho member aendlng It In. For this the king receives a commis sion. ' Most of the "yegg" gangs carry what Is known as a "kitten" with them. The "kitten" is n boy, young man or crip ple, whose duty It Is to visit houses and places of business, nppnrently beg ging food or selling shoestrings, lead pencils, etc.. nnd who then reports to the gnng "the lay of the land" so that when the time comes for pulling off the Job all nre familiar with the prem ises. The "kittens" are often runaway boys and Inter become "yeggs" them- i selves, destined to follow a life of crime and degradation. Pittsburg Ga-xetto-Times.
