I TWENTY MILLION BOOSTl The world may not know it so well as " ... . , I w do end thereiore we may oe exeuseui - - ' " . . ..".. , J..ni. W neonle called in the bes if we publish the fact broadcast that James J. Hill, when he manipulated. his entry into the Columbia Basin, vii the new north bank line of the Portland 4 Seattle Railway, from Pasco to Portland by way of Vancouver, and tacked on the Astoria & Columbia River Railroad wherewith to reach Astoria and the mouth .f the Columbia, he gave this city, county and section, a $20,000,000 boost, at the same time He took over me trun'nortation supremacy of the wheat- belt of the Northwest. This is the simplest way we can put the situation, and a glance at the map of the four States comprising that; magnificent ter ritory will verify it in( the dullest mind it interests. It has infinite meaning for the thou sands now here and amenable to such immense advantages as this, and it sig nifies much to the hundreds of thou sands of west-bound home-seekers and investors and free-lances of industry, who are facing, and traveling, this way. It means just what all of James J. Hill's big movements mean, expansion, devel opment, up-building and progress the reliance that there is always something doing in the country he enters; ths cer tainty that Hill never bottles up a dis trict, but unfolds and enriches it by the expenditure of his own millions as well as making it a source of profit for the millions of others. Astoria is profoundly fortunate in being the one place that must realize the most from this great movement. She is getting in readiness to meet the demands of the claims of the situation and will live up to the standards it will impose. 0 A FEW SIMPLE WORDS. Judge Thomas McBride, of the circuit court of Clatsop county, banded down a few simple words yesterday, in the gambling cases' then pending before him, that will do more to stop gamlling in this city and county than anything that his lesser officers have done since the embargo was laid by District Altor ney Hedges on this particular vice. He announced, in unmistakable language that if "ny person or persons are brought before me on a charge of gamb ling, they will be subject to a fine of $500." This is the sort of attitude to take in a case of this kind; and it is going to have its effect in this city. The truth of the business is, the venerable judge would not have been called upon to lay down such a predicate as this, if the law had been observed, or enforced, as it should have been; and since the .oainat munbline has been in voked by the proper authorities and has been gladly accepted by the many, and tacitly accepted by the few, the people f A uteris, are triad the judge has so emphasised the matter as to leave no sort of chance, save that of reckless tv s. fhnM whose temerity leads them to make light of law even if they do not openly defy it. TVi. w. man. to whom this straight statement from the bench applies, may make up his mind at once that Judge MoBride means jusi wnai ne bbjb and will cive any number of demonstra tions of his purpose, as fast as they are presented. Everybody Knows mm to look for, now. 0 THE NAME ASTORIA. Never in all her hundred years f ex istance has the city of Astorid been so widely; and honestly known as now. During the present year there has been carried on. from here, several perfected systems of advertising the municipality and the county, whereby, from one to a half-dozen people in every considerable town in this country has been brought Into touch with Astoria, and now her nam it spreading through Europe with the. Mm eood nuroose. Hundreds of fetiera r received here dailr by the Chamber of Coninieres sun me reauy houses of the city, charged with earnest inquiry of honest men as to the oppor tunities that await them out here in Oregon aud especially at thi end or' the state. And. it. may lie aid in paaaiiui. that ttas letters are carefully aud con scientiously answered; there 1 no wild and ft arrant boomine: no careless en courageiuent sent out meshed in a lot of unprovable stuff to be flung in our laces hi som disappointed immigrant vho shall come here under laiee suuremenij the truth, as nearly a it can be ascer tained, is the rule governing all who h.vA tAlon nart in this universal scheme of advertising, and this is the prime element of ororuise for us for the man who does come out and finds we have told hiui the actualities of the situa tion, will stav to share the well-eing of a people who have been clever enough in tell ! ftimnle truth. It is aoine to pay very handsomely, this great plan of advertising, andthe longer it goes on. th more we will have to how when those whom it brings here shall have to come to us- Astoria is all right j and her future is all right, toot THE MODEL CHASTER. It is held bv those competent to judge of such matters that .Baltimore, Mary land, ' is in possession of the motfcl American charter tor municipal buuuuib- tration. This beautiful old fcoutnern city had occasion, some years ago to nursre herself of one' of the foulest messes of graft sad vicious spoliation ver nown in this country, ana atter emerged, clean and strong fro,, the fivmcmloiia conflict with civic unncnt- eouness, her people called in the best brains and minds ana nearts 01a Bal timore had to draw on, and gave carte blanche for the compilation of a charter that should, once, and forever, put ber bevond the touch of defilement. For 10 rears she has been workiug under the instrument, without an atom of trouble and rejoices in her freedom. From time to time she has amended it in soots, where some civil condition bad krown beyond the effect of the law; but the organic, fundamental phase upon which h relied for the permanent pur ity of fixed elements of government, she has never touched and she is classed smong the cleanest and most substantial cities, morally, physically, and financial ly, m the world, today. It is, bard to frame a charter mat wui not Ik outgrown by the city fop which it is framed. But there are certaii els n.ental nrovisions for the perpetuation nt official integrity, moral tone, and straight finance, that may be introduced into any' charter; and if these are adopted and left untouched, they will serve as governmental maxims iop tu HmP, n.t they should be hunted up and applied in every town and city in the country. TAC0MA HAS A WHALE. TAOOMA. Sent. 20. If there are any whale hunters in the Puget Sound region they could not employ their time better than to make Tacoma their headquarters for a time. It wa probably the same whale that, with another one which did not at this time appear, has been seen scores of times in the waters around Tacoma this summer. The whale seemed 10 oe ic 10 unusually prankish mood and exhibited rare acquatic jiu-jitsu maneuvers for the benefit of the visitors at tne roini pen ance Park. It paid no attention to steamers that passed but continued div ing and blowing. It has not been seen today. The whale appeared to ca-e but little for the precence of boats or men, and fishermen say that a whaling crew could easily harpoon and capture it. There are two kiiuls of dog around the Gentry Brothers' Famous Shows which come to Astoria, Tuesday, Oct a, and while most of them are of iris tocratis origin and ere "tony" to the lt degree, there art many in ths ca nine department of the trained suiuml show whose family trees have been badly twisted and who emerge from the ancestral forests to receive the classi fication "mongrels." In the opinion of William Well, chief animal trainer with the Gentry Shows, the "mongrel," or "cur" Is most apt to lie a "quick study' and a "good per former'' than the dog of high degree, and Mr. Wells explains his position in this wiset "The high bred dog has tho stuff in him, all right and under proper condi tions will make a good performing Jog. hut, as a general thing, the dog with a pedigree has led the buy life ever since he can remember and so have his par ents and their parents, until latiness just comes natural. The high bred dog is all right at a bench shows but he doesn't ordinarily make good at a hard day's work. "Now the 'mongrel' has had to husU for the better part of his dog's life, lu some cases the eat, sleep and drink rule has applied to him, ,but generally he has had to get up and scratch if he wanted to eat. He has had to look out for himself, and that has made him bright and active and willing to learn. ' ''For appe arances sake we chose our trained dogs from the canine aristocracy but such a course spells harder work for us. For my part, if I were going to organize t troupe of trained ttags, 1 would be entirely willing to go i any bog pound and pick up my pupils there. As a matter of fact, we did have a fine dog named 'Scout' that w earned from the dog pound in Chicago three years ago and who, though he was most apparently a mongrel, became one of the best trained dogs in the troupe. Aris tocracy doesn't always mean intelligence or worthiness in Dogdom as well as in other walks of life. "How many kinds of dogs are there? Well, there are the Rusian wolf hounds, the St. Bernards, the spitzes, collies, cocker spaniels, shepards, greyhounds, beadle hounds, desker hounds, German poodles, French poodles, East Indian poodles, sky terriers, Scotch terriers, Ir ish terriers, rat terriers, curly dogs, Haright haired dogs, short-haired dogs, long-haired dogs, thin dogs, fat 'dogs, short dogs, long dogs, spotted dogs, black dogs, white dogs, brown dogs, brondle, dogs, bull dogs, and just dogs- Do you know that PInesalve Carbo lired acts like a poultice in drawing out inflammation and poison? It Is anti septic. For cuts, burns, exzems, crack ed hands it is immediate relief. Sold by Frank Hart's Drug store. NO MORE CATARRH. T. E. Laurens Will Not Allow it to Exist in Astoria. "There will be no more catarrh in Astoria," says T. F. Laurin, "unless people fail to follow the law of com mon sense." T. F. Laurin makes this statement be cause of the great success that has fol lowed the use of Hyomei in the treat ment of catarrhal troubles. So positive is this treatment in quick relief atjd permanent cure that be sells it under an absolute guarantee to refund the money if it does not do all that is claimed for it. There is no other treatment or medi cine for catarrhal troubles that is at all like Hyomei. With this treat ment, health-giving oils and balsams are breathed through a neat pocket in haler that comes with every outfit, so that every breath you take while using Hyomei is a breath of healing air. It kills all catarrhal germs and prevents their growth, so that ths curs is thor ough and permanent. Remember that Hyomei is sold unaer a guarantee to cost nothing unless it cures.
