Elsewhere In thla Issue appears a letter from L. A. Long, editor of the Htllsboro Argun, whose paper was re cently classed by the Oregonlan as one of the three Oregon Journals which are opposed to the Lewis and Clark fair. the others, being the "Woodburn Inde pendent and The Astorian. There is more truth than humor in Mr. Long's . letter. The Oregonlan evidently has become so accustomed to dictating sen tlment hew In Oregon that any dis senting voice calls forth from It willful misrepresentation and abuse. The Portland paper's latest Strictures, ap ropos of its failure to have an extra legislative session called, are charac teristic in the extreme. As will be ob served, there was practically no sent! ment for an extra session, only about 1500 persons having signed the pet tion to Governor Geer. The extra ses sion talk was simply a political dodge and those who saw through the scheme and denounced It are held up by the Oregonlan as public enemies. The Orearonlan is a big newspaper and ought to be in better business. As has been pointed out In these columns, the proposed fair is a state undertaking, and we of Clatsop and Washington counties have as much right to discuss Its conduct as those of Multnomah. Perhaps If the rest of us should get off the earth, as Mr. Long suggests, the Oregonlan would be able to work out Its narrow policy and successfully coerce the people Into its way of thinking. The Oregonlan is shaping things for full-fledged opposition to a venture that otherwise would com mend Itself to the people. Recognition of labor unions will be the only question before the arbitration commission. The matter of wages has already been passed upon by the Oper ators, who have said they would not oppose the asked for advance were it not that the demands of the miners Included also that their organization be recognized by the operators. That the miners will hold out until this fea ture of their demands is favorably act ed upon is quite evident, and if the op erators decline to grant the request the work, of the commission will amount to naught. The miners are certainly entitled to the consideration asked, and If further labor troubles oc cur in the anthracite regions the oper- Looks more attractive than housework for a woman, but it is also even more exhausting. The work is often done under high pressure, and the brightness of the eyes ana tne flushed cheeks of the attentive clerk indicate nervous ness rather than health. If this is true under most favorable condi tions, what shall be aid of those who suffer from woman ly diseases, and who endure headache, backache, and other pains day after day? No sick woman should neglect the means of cure for womanly diseases offered in Doctor Pierce's Favorite Prescription. "A heart overflowing with gratitude, 11 well acose of duty, urRei me to write to you and trll you of my wonderful recovery." say" Mtaa Corinne C. Hook, Orangeburg. Orangeburg Co., South Carolina. "By the use of Dr. Fierce'! Favorite l'nr-ri!tion I am entirely new being compared with the poor miserable sufferer who wrote you four montha ago. The rebuke al ready administered to Baer Indicates a determination on the part of the com mission to be f;Jr to tabor, but unfor tunately the prospects for an amicable settlement are not bright. So long as capital withholds recognition of labor, Just that long will there be trouble be tween the two. Strike, now so prevalent, says the London Chronicle, are commonly thought to lie a nineteenth century production, but It Is only the .name (said to be of American origin) that Is modern. Their power as wage rais ers uas tried at least as far back as the sixteenth century, for in the "Cal endar of State Papers" 1 a letter from Sir William Fit William to Mr. Sec retary Cromwell containing the state ment that "the workmen at Dover re fused to work except for stxpense a day. Two of the ringleaders had been some time of the black guard in the king's kitchen." No moral Imputa tion was conveyed in calling then) black guards; all that was implied was that they formerly guarded the pots, pans and other utensils of the klnst. It was a much later generation that turned th; term to purposes of abuse. The marvellous advances of present day surgery arc shown by the readi ness of the ablest men In the hospitals to take stitches In the heart Itself when a patient is brought in so wound ed in the very center of vitality that such an operation affords the only pos sible chance of prolonging life. Former generations held the belief that a seri ous injury to the brain or the heart must be fatal, and that nothing could be done except to lessen the pain and sufferings of the victim. But the mas ter minds of surgery In this era never despair while the faintest dicker of life remains. The annual number of the Portland Tradesman is out. It is printed on book paper, is profusely illustrated and gives the commercial interests of the metropolis much space. Altogether It is a creditable edition. NOTICE.
