'A A great deal la being aald about the Initiative and referendum.- - While a great .number -of newspapers are dla euwlng the subject there are those who think tbeae two articles may be kept' in- restaurants. It Is claimed that the sentiment is growing favor able to the initiative and referendum throughout the country. An amend men to the constitution will be sub mitted to the people this year provid ing for the passage of a law establish ing the initiative and referendum sys tem in this country. ' It Is claimed to be favored by a majority of the vo;ers Irrespective of politics. The Evening Telegram favors the law, as well as many other papers In the state. The "initiative" Is defined as giving the people the power to propose laws and amendments to the constitution and to enact oeneject the same; at the pulls, independent of the legisia&va assembly. The referendum is define! as giving the people -the power to demand that Mystics Will do much to develop a muscular body. But the strength of the body is not to be measured by its muscle, but by its blood. If the blood is impure, the body, in spite of its bulk and brawn, falls an easy prey to dis- II ease. I There is no niedi I c'Ile 1ual to Doctor Jl -Ai Pierce's Golden Med- the purifying of the Wood. It carries off the poisons which contaminate the life fluid. It increases the activity of the blood-making glands and gives the body an increased supply of pure, body-build-.ing blood. It builds up the body with sound, healthy flesh instead of flabby fat, promotes the appe tite, feeds the nerves, and so gives to weak, nervous people vital ity and vigor. There is no alcohol contained in ''Golden Medical Discovery," and it is absolutely free from opium, cocaine and all other narcotics. I fee! ft my duty to write to you of the won derful curative power of your Golden Med ical Discovery." " wriie Ocorge S Henderson, Kaq., of Deuaiid. Lee Co., Florid. "I hid a bad bruise on my right ear and my blood ai badly out of order, I tried local doctor, but with no food reaulta. Finally 1 wrote you the jwrticulars in my cane and yon advised your 'Gulden Medical Discovery,' which 1 began to take. From the it bottle I began to feel better, and when I had taken eight bottles the sore was healed up. I wish yon success." T)r. ' ' ThVman with the scheme that will produce riches galore foe the "angel" who will furnsh the money to carry tt out bobs up frequently during the pro grew of preparing for a World's Fair. Senator Mark Hanna, of Ohio, known UTiiwally to be a man of weaJth and sagacity could not escape the schema fiend. A few days ago the senator re ceived the following letter; "On the top of Mount Arrarat there is still preserved burled, amid eternal snow. Noah's ark, I am org anliing a rotn pany to dig it out nj bring it to the I'nUed States." Tou can help me to make ki of money if you will jgo into the scheme, because the original Noah's ark would be the best paying attraction at the St. Xul World' Fair.' Up to the present writing Sen ator Hanna has not invested in the Noah's ark scheme. The Portland Commission la having a hard time with "Its dredging propo sition. The Taxpayers' league has confronted the commission with a solid protest. The leagu say that 1200,00 Is too much and to levy that amount would place taxes' too high. The proposed dredging which It is es timated will require this sum, ex tends from Portland to CS mles this side. In summing up the many needed improvements within the distance named it is ascertained that not less than 00,00 wl'J be required to even put the river In temporary better con dition; it Is a sort of bridging over for the time until more substantial Im provements can be made. At this rate for temporary navigation It will cost more money than figures can enum erate to fix the channel so that' the inland city may be made a seaport. A strong effort is being made to get the postal currency measure through Congress to supplant the present mon ey order system. It Is urged by an advocate of the scheme: " The postal check currency or. some other plan should be adopted whereby the trans mission of money by mail may be ren dered easy and certain. It is remark' able that the country should so long have been "compelled to put op with the present very unsatisfactory "ar rangements for sending money by mail Fusion Republicans n Portland are giving it out that as a matter of home pride Pordand will go for Chamber lain over W. 3 Furnish, just because he happens to live in the same city with him. While Portland Is the hub of the state she also claims to be the hub of the' Republican party and she Is expected "to show it in the present campaign. 1 " " The Federation of Labor has decid ed to declare 20 days fast against fresh meats. On account of the high prices effected by theyomb!ne on fresh jir.eat It Is thought that an absten- jance from meat eating for JO days will ! bring down the prices. ' " '' Reoprts come from all points In Clat sop County, and from all over the state ' far as that Is concerneJ, that ths evidence is abundantly favored for the succe-ss of the Republican ticket In the present election. The National Biennial gathering of the Knights of Pythias, which con- j'venes at San Francisco. August 10 to 1 20, promised to be the greatest fra jternal order i?a.hering in the annals of history. A DOCTOR'S BAD PLIGHT. "Tsvo yeai-K ago as a result of a se vere cold, I lost my voice," writes Dr. M. L. Bearbrough, of Hebron, Ohio, "then began an obstlnant cough. Ev ery remedy known to me as a practic ing physician for 35 years failed, and I daily grew worse.
