This sys tem makes it necessary that the auditing of the books of the Clerks and Treasurers be done under the direction of the. State Insurance Commission. It was the opinion of both bodies that the system is cumbersome, ex pensive and otherwise unsatis factory. WAR TO BE WAGED ON PREDATORY ANIMALS According to the announce ment of tho district forester at Portland, the recently passed agricultural appropriation bill contained a proviHioon by which $100,000 is to b set aside to ward the destruction of preda tory animals. It Is estimated that over $15, 000.000 worth of stock Is des troyed annually In the United States through the depredations of such animals as wolves, coy otes, wildcats, cougars, and bears. ' While the Biological Survey will have charge of the work, the Forest Service will co-operate with them In the regions of the West where there are Nat ional Forests. ''! The fat stock Bhow at the Portland Union Stockyards last week was one of the most not able events ever held on the Pa cific Coast. From year to year the stock exhibited at this an nual show shows great Improve ment, but the animals presented m the ring last week were of a quality to make one wonder If the limit of perfection has not at last been reached and if it is possible that further improve ment can be made. And in this matter of improvement of stock the agricultural colleges of the Pacific Northwest states are cer tainly occupying the front rank, as animals entered by students at these institutions were awarded the highest honors. Tho Grand Champion of the en tire show was a splendid two year old Angus steer weighing 1650 pounds exhibited by the I Agricultural College of Idaho. ricultural College or ldano. This steer was sold at auction and brought 21 cent3 per pound. Practically all stock shown was sold at auction, the prices ranging fairly high. The high est price paid for a Bingle animal was $1,025 for a Holstein bull, a close second being a cow of the same breed which brought $1,000. One anr two year old Shorthorn breeding stock brought from $200 to $500 each. Taken as a whole the sale was one of the most successful ever held in the Northwest. Atten dance for the week aggregated' about 40,000, many of the vis itors having come from distant points, staying nil the week and following the salts closely. The ragers, too, have done excellent work In trapping and poisoning these preying animals. Hence, the work done has been but a temporary relief. I Now, however, that an ap ! propriatlon has been made, the work can be carried on with some hone of success, and stock owners, both Inside and outside -f the .National Forests, may look forward to the time when I their sheep and cattle will be free from the attacks of these rapacious marauders. As a result of this activity on the part or the redcral govern ment, the, stock owners them selves have awakened to the neeus or trie situation.
