Lincoln County Leader SUBSCRIPTION RATES One Year - - - l 50 Six Months - 75 Th7ee Months - 50 The little cold weather the first of the week served as a reminder of what most of us had to contend with for several months every winter .in the frozen East. Let us rejoice that we live in a place where we have but very little frost and the grass is green and growing the whole year. Our officials are work to get all the land in the county in school districts. At the adjonrned term of Commissioners' Court last week I they increased the size of several districts and took in several thous and acres of land that has never lieen in the boundary of any dis trict. Most of this land is heavily thubeled, and will auuli be made to help pay the taxes and build up our schools. We hope the good work M ill be continued until every foot of this land is placed in school and road districts. We will get this timber cruised some day, perhaps ,next year, and then part of the burden of taxation will fall on the timber owners, who have, in most instances, so far escaped the taxes. J. E. Defebaugh, editor of the "American Lumberman" of Chi cago, who has bestowed such marked praise on Douglas fir, has the fol lowing to say editorially in the cur rent issue of the "Lumberman:" "The Pacific Northwest makes a wonderful appeal to every visitor. It is a land of living waters, of golden soil, of mineral wealth be yond comprehension, of forests which will bless mankind when other lands are desolate; a land of mountain, plain and valley; of a people great in intellect, energy, endurance and kindliness. In this golden Northwest, is a climate wit h out the harshness of the North or the enervating softness of the South, these people are building an empire. They have harnesses the streams for power, or, pouring them over the plains, have produced fruitful fields , and gardens; they are wrestling from the earth its mineral wealth ; they are converting the forests into forms of utility and beauty; they are building schools, and colleges; the Bible vision of every man dwelling under his own vine and tig tree is realized here, where his every bodily need and intellectual want may be gratified. The miner al wealth of the country is great and great are its achievements, but 1 letter than all this are the people themselves a chosen race growing io numbers and in all the accom plishments and graces which make a people mutually useful and happy."
