HOME MADE MIXTURE SAID TO BE INEXPENSIVE AND EASILY PREPARED BY ANYONE. Is Said to Promptly Relieve Backache and Overcome Kidney Trouble and Blad der Weakness Though Harmless and Pleasant to Take. What will appear very interesting to many people here is the article taken from a New York daily paper, giving a simple prescription, as formulated by a noted authority, who claims that he has found a positive remedy to oure almost any rase of backache or kidney or blrader derangement, in the follow ing simple prescription, if taken before the stage of Bright a disease: Fluid Extract Dandelion, one-half ounce; Compound Kargon, one ounce; Compound Syrup Sareaparilla, three ounces. Shake well in a bottle and take In teaspoonful doses after each meal and again at bedtime. A well known authority, when asked regarding this prescription, stated that the ingredients are all harmless, and can be obtained at a small cost from any good prescription pharmacy, or the mixtuie would be put up if asked to do bo. He further stated that while this prescription is often prescribed in rheu matic afflictions with splendid results, he could see no reason why it would not be a splendid remedy for kidney and urinary tioubles and backache, as It has a peculiar action upon the kid ney structure, cleansing these most im portant organs and helping them to sift and filter from the blood the foul acids and waste matter which cause sickness and Buffering. Those who suffer can make no mistake in giving it a trial. The Old Man's Experience. "lie's the boy after your own heart. Isn't he?" "Not much!" replied the old mnn. For example, when typhoid fever or pneumonia Is prevalent, only a few, as compared with the total population, acquire the disease, although all may be living un der the same conditions and be equully exposed to the Infection. Physicians say, )n general terms, that those who escape have greater resisting power, which means that they have some pow er within them to destroy the germs that get Into the body, and so to pre vent fiheir multiplication and the man ufacture by them of the poisons whlcn cause the lesions an symptoms of the disease. For a long time It was unknown how the system was enabled to destroy the microbes of disease or to neutralize their effects. A solution of the prob lem was, however, recognized as essen tial If physicians were ever going to be able to treat infectious diseases In the only rational way that Is to say, by destroying the cause; or to prevent with certainty their occurrence In those who have been exposed to the In fection. Bacteriologists all over the world devoted themselves with great assiduity to the study of this problem, with the result that they are now be ginning to understand the subject, al though there are still obscure points which must be cleared up before the fulfillment of Pasteur's prophecy that the time will come when It will be pos sible to exterminate all Infectious dis eases. There are two theories regarding the way in which the body resists an ln vaslon of the bacteria of disease the chemical, advanced by Ehrllch, a Ger man bacteriologist, and the mechanical, discovered by the Russian scientist, Metchnlkoff, now at the Pasteur in stltute In Paris. According to the first, when the spe cial poison elaborated by the bacteria gets Into the blood, this fluid at once begins to manufacture another sub stance which acts as an antidote, com bining with the toxin and forming an Inert, non-poisonous substance. The discovery of the antitoxin used In the treatment of diphtheria was the result of this theory. The second theory Is that certala cells, among which are some of the white blood-corpuscles, acts as an arm? of defense, seizing upon the bncterla and destroying them. These two theories are not really contradictory, although they seem so, and boflh processes are probably at work In every case of successful re sistance to an attack of Infectious dis ease. Recently It has been found that the white blood-corpuscles, called pha gocytes or "eating cells," need assist ance to ennble them to destroy the bac teria, and on this discovery Is founded the opsonin theory, which will be dis cussed In a future article. Youth's Companion. Monotonous Scenery. Mrs. Grimes, the landlady, was try ing to find out the nature of her new boarder's occupation. First she asked him If he was In business. He told her that he was not Then she sug gested that possibly he was a salesman, "No, I'm not a salesman, exactly." 'Traveling man?" "Yes, I am a sort of traveling man." "Make regular trips, I suppose?" "Very regular." "Well, I should think you'd like that There's some variety about It" "There, Isn't much variety about my trips. They're always through the same territory." 'That gets kind o' tiresome, does It?" "Very." "Still, If business Is good, and you make plenty of sales " "But I don't make any sales. The fact la, Mrs. Grimes, I am a conduc tor." "I'm the conductor of an elevator In a big department store." "Oh I" Youth's Companion. Too Indnlarent. "I don't see why you sneer at Mr. Markley," she said, "because he's so shabby. Clothes don't make a man." "No," replied her husband, "but his wife's clothes often break a man. I sneer at Markley because he's fool enough to be that sort of man." Phila delphia Press. A Frequent Liratnl, Of all the words of tongue and pen. Tbe maddest are these: "You'll pay ma when?"
