Times-Dispatch: "In God We Trust" lias been dropped from the new $10 gold 1'iecos, ns of course you noticed. The ixxiple of this country have 1,-arned a few tilings alxmt New York hanks and their methods that it will take them a long time to for get. Says the Philadelphia Telegraph: "It is said that President Roosevelt deposits his salary in a bank as soon as he receives it. You can't blame Teddy when you look at some of the 1 eople that hang around the White House." The Jamestown Exposition closed Saturday night. It was the biggest fizzle financially in the history of the world 82,500,000 in debt. They should have sent to Oregon and got Jeff. Myers and a few others to run their fair. At a meeteng of representatives from every part of the state held at Portland Monday, it was decided not to ask Governor Chamberlain to call an extra session of the legis lature at this time, but resolutions were adopted asking the Governor to continue the legal holidays for a period not to exceed ten clays after the New York and Chicago banks resume specie payments. ' Senator Simon, arguing in de fence of the officers of the Title Guarantee & Trust Company, against the charge that they had taken de Iosits knowing the bank to lie in solvent, says they cannot be pun ished therefor, because the statute that would punish this act, passed by the legislature a year ngo, is not yet in force. But, Senator, we know a statute on this subject, in an old law book, that is in force It reads, "Thou shalt not steal." Oregonian. . .Give us your hand, Mr. Farmer we are proud to know yi-u. V' called to you in our distress and right nobly have you responded. It's you with your bumper crops, who have brought the ships from "The Chalk White Cliffs of Albion," to Portland's harbor, who will leave gold for your produce. We are proudly exhibiting your world fa mous apples. Here's to you, Mr. Farmer, your faithful wife, your Hturdy sons and rosy cheeked daugh ters. Long may you live to enjoy the reward of your labor for you have saved the day the credit of Oregon you've made good. C. II. Carpenter in Portland Journal Ex-Secretary of the Treasury Shaw, long a western man, but now a New Yorker, says: "The west has lost confidence in the east. It will cost us here millions of dollars be fore we regain the prestige and cor dial relationship of the past. The bankers of western cities have no love now for the. bankers of New York. They had placed their money on deposit here, but when they asked for it they were refused. They say New York sought only to protect itself and tied up everything, so that nil the rest of the country was forced to adopt urgent measures to save it self." There is likely to .lie consid erable truth in this. The rest of the country will at least keep a close watch of New York and be suffici ently suspicious to prevent lieing caught in a like trap again though it may lie many years before like conditions arise. Journal. The fruit growers of Lincoln coun ty have woke up at last and organ ized an association known as the Fruitgrowers Union of Lincoln count-.
