The Russian cruiser Variag, which successfully completed hor builders' trial trip, has shown herself to be the fastest cruiser of her class in the world. She represents the most modem ideas in warship construction, and her arma ment is superior to that of any other cruiser of her class afloat. The required speed is twenty-three knots an hour, but her builders declare she can make twenty-five knots on a pinch. The men who sailed aboard of her on her recent trip from Philadelphia say that our wn navy boasts of nothing that is any better from either the standpoint or tailing or general availability. The crew of the Variag consists of twenty officers, fifteen petty officers and 500 men. The vessel Is a protect ed cruiser, 400 feet long, 52 feet beam and 19 feet 0 Inches draft. Her dis placement is 6,500 tons. The indicated tiorse power Is L'O.OOO, and steam is geu rated by boilers of the N'iclausse type. She has twin screws. ' , i 1 Strawberry Sponge. One qnart of strawberries, half a cupful of cold water, one cupful of sugar, one third box of gelatine, juice of one lemon, whites of three egL's. Soak the gelatine two hours, or until it is melted. Mash the berries through a sieve. Mix the sugar with the juice, add the lemon and gelatine and stir until all are dissolved. Stand in a pan of ice water, and when it begins to thicken fold in the stiffly beaten whites, stirring until the mixture begins to thicken. Tarn into a mold and set on the ice until stiff. The land for late potatoes should be plowed deep and harrowed tine. The land should never be allowed to form a crust before the plants are up. Run a harrow over tho field, both before and after the potatoes are up.
