Hawkins returned Wednesday evening from Salt Lake City, where she attended the grand session of the Women of Wood craft and was honored by re-election as graud manager, being now chair man of the board, which position she will fill for four years. She was accompanied by her children, who visited in Albany during her ab sence, and by her mother, Mrs. S. H. Powers of Clarksville, Ark. Mr. Hawkins will return from Ark ansaw in about two weeks. Mrs. H. has received numerons letters from him, and they all contain un complimentary remarks about Ark ansaw's torrid climate. He evi dently longs for Oregon's cooling shades and trout streams. Mrs. H. W. Vincent and Mrs. Dora Clark visited the Blower ranch Wednesday, under the escort of His Honor Collins. Mrs. Leader was also present, having stopped while en route home from Yaquina. Twenty years ago Mrs. Vincent promised Mrs. Blower a visit, and Wednesday she was able to make good the promise. Like all others who visit the Blower home, they report a splendid time and lots of fine fruit. A. T. Peterson and family were among the visitors at Otter Rock Sunday. Mr. Peterson reports that Prof. Holm, who has been at Otter Rock with his family for several jv:s got struck by a big breaker a'.T slammed on the beach with terrific force. The professor lost bark enough to almost fill achittim sack. Postmaster Arnold and Rite Ded rick left Wednesday for an outing at Otter Rock. Their better frac tions, accompanied by MesdamesJ. S. Akin and L. M. Siarr and Misses Vera Starr and Anna Alexander, went to the popular resort Sunday. E. W. Sawdon returned last Fri day from a visit at Siletz with Rev. E. H. Bryant and departed next morning for his home at Walla Walla, Wash. He thinks seriously of bringing his family to this county in the near future. Lee Wade is running ' the post office during the absence of Post master Arnold. He makes a first class Nasby and is undoubtedly 'the best republican in the county. Mrs. E. Bennett of Portland, ac companied by three .daughters and a son, arrived Wednesday evening for a visit with Hon. C. B. Crosno an.d family. Bob Collins has become a home steader. He has secured a good claim near the Agency and is plant ing a house on it this week. .Miss Lulu Burt returned the fore part of the week from Newport, having resigned her position in the poMoffice at that place. Miss Jessie Buoy arrived yester day from Athena, Or., and will probably remain for several months. . Joe Shermer of Oyster City, who is still single, was a county seat visitor Wednesday. Joe and Cecil' Blower of Mill 4 were up ou business yesterday. A; Olsson of Newport visited his Pjopeer ranch Tuesday. Fred Thayer visited Yaquina last Saturday. Smoke the General Steedman 5c cigar, at Landreth's. Al Taylor of Pool slough was up on business vesterday. E. A. Swan in enjoying himself at Nye creek this week. Charlie Loomis, one of Newport's merchants, was up. on business Tuesday. Carl Anderson of Newport is in town today. He called and got in on our Homestead club. Miss Pearl Bailey of Oyster City came up Weduesday in a rowboat, with Carl Knudson as ballast. Miss Alberta Hobart orders The Leader sent to her at Grange ville, Idaho, where she is engaged in teaching. Alviu Bagley, an old .res ident of Lincoln county, now of Jefferson, arrived Wednesday even ing to look after his property inter ests. He owns a ranch on Depoe and s-'ome lots in Toledo. Sometimes it is our fault, sometimes the other fellow's. W. II. Buoy resigned his posi tion as local agent of the C & E. and was succeeded Tuesday morn ing by B. H. Boles, a capable young man well known to many of our citizens. Mr. Buoy is engaged in buying and shipping salmon from this point, a business which brings bigger returns for less labor than any other. J. II. McNeil and family and Miss Minnie Owram returned Sunday from a week's outing at Otter Rock. Miss Owram's skill as a portrait painter hardly exceeds her landscape work, and we may ex pect soon to see some of the results of her recent visit to Otter Rock.' Lincoln county contains the finest scenery and the best artist in the state. George Landreth returned Mon day evening from Portland. He left Mrs. Landreth at the Good Samaritan hospital, apparently on. the road to recovery, but for several days her condition was decidedly critical. Her sister, Mrs. H. Stover, went to Portland Monday to re main with her until her recovery. She was occompanied .as far as Corvallis by little Earl, who re turned with his father. Attorney B. F. Jones and Dep uty District Attorney B. F. Swope went over to Siletz Monday to try case in Justice Grant's court. George Harris had been arrested for shooting and killing Jim White's "yellow, mare," which was noted by The Leader of the 3d inst. Prosecutor Swope extracted enough "binding" evidence from the wit nesses to call George into circuit court when it convenes next Janu ary, Justice Grant placing his bond at $50, which he furnished on the spot. Our informant says Attorney Jones made an able and eloquent plea for the prisoner at the tar, but with the grave of the murdered mare in evidence, what could the court do but bind George over ? Ordered that the judge and Commis sioner Stanton be authorized to look at bridge, and, if deemed necessary, to ad vertise for bids for same. In the matter of the bridge petitioned for by J. A. Master Fred Vincent departed this morning for his home at Pen dleton. Mrs. D. H. Mazee of Grange ville, Idaho, is visiting her sister, Mrs. J. H. McNeil. Mrs. C. G. Copeland and daugh ter Esther of Siletz were passengers for Portland this morning. It will do you good to look thro' the stock of new spring goods at the Y. B. M. Co.'s store. Mrs. A. T. Peterson left yester day for a visit with her parents near Monroe, accompanied by her son Johnnie. The C. & E. wiii run its last ex cursion of i the season to Newport next Sunday, with usual excursion rates and hours. Lugger & Pruett have received a large assortment of men's kip and calf boots, as well as shoes for ladies and gents, in all grades and prices. T. P. Fish's new store building is nearing completion. The glass front was put iti this week and painting commenced. It will be a nice-looking business house. Congressman Tongue was a pass enger for Newport yesterday even ing. Agent Buford drove down to Newport today and Mr. Tongue will accompany him to Siletz for a brief visit, returning to his home at Hillsboro Monday. The biggest blackberries we have seen this season or any other sea sonwere grown by Assessor F. M. Wadsworth. Tins is additional proof that he is well qualified for his official position in the Lincoln County Farmers association. The entire Leader force enjoyed a deer hunt Monday with Captain and Mrs. H. R. Sturdevant, Ralph Sturdevant and two sons and TL-p Hiser and family. The scene of slaughter was the captain's ranch on Mill creek. The deer hunt re sulted in a good dinner, a ;ood time and a gallon of huckleberries. John, Mike and Simon Schirmer of Pool slough were in town Tues day. Chinook Bill hired the former to take him to Newpor tand return that evening in his rowboat. They got back about a couple o'clock next morning, accompanied by about 500 pounds of salmon from Siletz. We understand they had hard work to keep the boat from going ashore at Oyster City 011 both the down and return trip. A jolly crowd left Toledo yester day morning, bound for the hop yards near Independence. There were between thirty and forty per sons in the company. Those rec ognized were: J. T. Ewing and family, Mrs. Karl Helgeson and family minus Karl, Mrs. Jay Dunn, Miss Ollie Brurafield, Mrs. Garr and children, Misses Olson and Rache, John Carlson, B. Olscn and A. Thompson and son. This morning Mrs. Antone Bredeson. son Swen and daughters Edna and Retia and Mrs. Austin Rosebrook and sons Shedd and Leon left for the same place via the wagon route. The hop-picking season is on and many of Lincoln county's citizens are combining business with pleasure and assisting in the har vest. Jimmie Derby walked over from the ranch Wednesday. He reported the worms all dead or decamped' and preparations for putting iu an- other crop going on at the Derby ranch. If was decided to meet every week until after the fair, the time for which will be set at the next meet ing, to be held at the home of Mrs. J. II. McNeil next Tuesday. Mrs. Peairs, matron at. the Agency school, returned yesterday evening from Astoria accompanied by her daughters, and went to Siletz t )day. Her husband has secured a , position at Grand Round. J. H. Crawford of Elk City is one of the latest to take advantage -of our Homestead offer. We un derstand Mr. Crawford's family joined the party of hop-pickers that went to Independence yesterday. Dr. M.
