Altree brothers shingle mill on
Drift creek was destroyed by fire
between the hours of 4 and 5
o'clock Tuesday morning. Oliver
had been in town uutil a late hour
Monday night and reached his
home near the mill about 3 o'clock
Tuesday morning. At that hour
everything about the mill was ap
parently all right. About an hour
later the boys were awakened by
Daniel Grady, who first discovered
the fire. The structure burned
raoidly and soon collapsed. There
aie very strong reasons for believ
ing that the fire was the work of an
incendiary. It could he seen that
it did not start near the engine, as
it was in the upper part when first
discoverde, but in several place?.
Moreover, the fire occurred about
ten hours after the mill shut down
Monday evening. The engine and
boiler and one saw are probably
not damaged beyond repair, but
everything else was destroyed in
cluding several thousand shingles,
and the boys will not be able to re-
! build, it is a hard blow, a laree
order from the valley ' having just
been placed with the mill, and the
outlook for the future being very
bright. Oliver has worked hard to
get started in the business, and
much sympathy is expressed for
him by all who are familiar with
the situation. There is little hope
that the perpetrator of the cowardly
deed will be brought to justice, but
every effort should be made to dis
cover the wretch. He deserves
more than the limit.

trip up the line Wednesday morn
ing, returning in the evening.

Mrs. C. F. Altree went up to Nor

parents. She was accompanied by
her sister, Mrs. Mary Hamar, who
has been visiting her. '

the Bay Monday for medicines for
use in the treatment of her brother,
Harry Davis, who is ill at the Davis
home at Yaquina with an -attack of
pneumonia.--Corvallis Times.
A party of eight Germans, just
arrived from Wisconsin, left Cor
vallis last week, says the Times, to
loca'.e in Lincoln county. A letter
received ffom them since announces
that each has taken up a matter

Miss Mary Buford, of Siletz, who
has just recovered from a serious
illness contracted while visiting in
this city, went to Portland and
Oregon City, yesterday . afternoon
for a short visit. She was accom
