Speaking of country schools: Has
it ever occurred to you that the
brave young women vvhe teach are
miserably paid? The ; politciaus,.
who do no good for anybody, gen
erally get fat salaries when they
strike office; bnt the school teachers,
who are doing more good in the
world than all the politicians in the
world could ever think of doing, re
ceive paltry wages, ridiculously out
of proportion to the value of their
work. The monthly wages might
be reasonable if received every
month, but for several months in
the year the teacher is out of em
ployment. In order to qualify her
self for the position of teacher she
has to study very hard and submit
to rigid examinations; and wheti
she gets a school her task is a
dreary, thankless one, and its mon
otony is maddening. She is teach
ing the children who may some day
be the great authors, poets, painters
and statesman of the country and
receives the wages of a chamber
maid. So long as cheap politicians
can draw $100 per month for hold
ing down unnecessary offices, and
teachers get about $30 a month for
six months in the year,- we ought
to sing low about the school houses,
the "bulwarks of our liberties."

The stockmen to the east of us
are feeling in most excellent spirits.
In fact they have been feeling good
for a year. In most markets beef
has been higher than for several
years past and prices realized have
given a handsome margin over the
cost of production. The bulk of
them have sold at from five to ten
dollars more per head greater than
a year ago and some of them up to
j as much as three limes the prices
reali.ed when they were at the
! lowest notch. Some idea can lie
gained of the immense profit of a
stockman when we talk of Montana
which shipped one hundred and j
fifty thousand head of beef this year !
and put it. at the sinall sum often
i dollars more per head than in 1897,
j two years a;;o. this makes a million
(and one-half dollars allowed for the
increased sum that finds its way in;o
the stockman's pocket. It Las not
been an nncommon thing at all this
past year for stock to bring over
five cents per pound on foot and
some have gone up to 6 and 7 cents.
