To Our Readers.
Owing to the non-arrival of ready
prints from Portland, ThkLkadkr
is only half-size this week, and also
late. More on the subject would
be a waste of words. Only those
who have been there know just
how we feel about it.
Jack Allphin returned Wednes
day evening from a tour of the
eastern end of the county in search
of .some of the jurors for the com
ing term of circuit court. He found
them and held them up with sub
poenas with much dignity and
grace. One of his victims was
Wallace Nash of Nashville. When
he reached the Nash ranch Jack
was muddle and hungrier than
anybody, and too tired to tell the
truth, but Mr. Nash took him in
just the same and soon made him
young again. Jack says Mr. Nash's
farm consists of a city about the
size of Toledo, but ever so much
prettier, and all the luxuries of all
the seasons are to be found thereon.
He advises everybody to visit the
Nasb ranch and get a feast both
for their eyes and their inwards.
Ade Crosno aucl N. Snow were
absent Wednesday in the wilds of a
few "miles north, not far from the
ocean beach, in search of a legen
dary pirate treasure. If they found
the buried bullion they won't give
ii a way neither the bullion nor the
fact and we must forever be in
doubt as to whether they are mill
ionaires or just common plugs like
the rest of us. If Mr. Snow, how
ever, ever appears on the street with
his hair and whiskers dyed and
wearing a stovepipe hat, he will be
under suspicion.

Bob Sellers of the bridge crew had
a thrilling experience up near Nor-

point in Washington, where they
have resided for several months

Prof. Holm received a new piano
last Saturday, a present for

some day shine among the mu
sicians of Oregon.
Dr. C. Dyer, who hails from
the vicinity of Roseburg, was in
Toledo over Sunday and uext morn
ing was escorted up the river to
Storrs, we understand, by Jay Van
Cleve, it being the doctor's inten
tion to start a select school or some
thing up there.
There wasn't a quorum at the
meeting of the Ladies Aid society
with Mrs. Dedrick Tuesday, on
account of the disagreeable weather,
and no business was transacted.
The society will meet next Tues
day afternoon with the president,
Mrs. J. I,. Hyde.

While hunting ducks on the bay
Wednesday, in the bend just oppo
site the city, Dr. Darnell's Smith
hammerless slipped from the boat
and went to the bottom. William
Boone happened to be in town and
he went home, got his 28-foot
oyster tongs and, after about ten
minutes work, recovered the lost
shotirun. It lay in twenty-seven feet
of water. Oyster tongs are a handy
weapon, and Will Boone is a sure
dint with them. The incident re -
minded the writer of his experience
with a deer a lew months ago.

POLICE COVKT.
In the police court during the current
year there have been no arrests for the
violations of any of the city ordinances.
There have been no fines collected, or
prisoners committed to the City Jail.

During the current year one license
has been issued for peddlers, showmen,
etc., amounting to $2. 50, and two semi
-annual liquor licenses have been is
sued, aggregating $-100.00.

No Casualties.
The woodmen goat was out on
Thursday evening and the forest
resounded to the voices of the hearty
choppers as they encouraged his
antics and kept him in bounds.
Just as the horn of the watchman
announced the hour of 10 an im
perative alarm was sounded. It
went pealing through the forest,
awaking the echors. A frightened
sentry appeared at the camp-fire
and reported that a vast army of
Women of Woodcraft was ap
proaching and demanded possession
of the forest. Cotisul Commander

after considering for a moment,
took counsel of Oora Paul and.
planting his feet squarely upon his
inalienable rights, determined to
stand his ground. He there upon
ordered that, the goat be instantly
suppressed and concealed, and the
call to arras sounded.
A volley of darts announced the
approach of the invaders, but when,
on close inspection they proved to
be Cupid s own weapons, the en
tire camp gallantly enlisted in the
cause of the fair god.
It is needless to state that each
woodman soon found a hearty Te-
ceptive to his dart. The happy
couples were then conducted to Dr.
Thayer's offices, where Cupid and
his tollowers had wrought a com
plete transformation. The brilliant
chandelier revealed a scene of ex
quisite loveliness. In the place of
the doctor's skeleton, pill boxes
and instruments of torture were
tables spread with the daintiest of
linen, gleaming with the silver and
china and dicorated with flowers
and maiden-hair fern. The walls
were artistically trimmed with ever
greens. Chicken, salads, cakes,
cocoa and all manner of good thing
were in evidence, and feasting be
came the order of the hour. Toasts
were proposed. "The Lamp" was
responded to by Grand Manager
Mrs. Annie Hawkins, "The Cir
cle" by Consul Commander Holm.
After the feast games and social
converse concluded a most delight
ful evening. Cupid.

A.T. Peterson returned Wednes-
day evening from a business trip to
Albany.
Captain Wakefield, of Waldport,
armed this morning on business
before the circuit court.
Fash & Gaar have found the
stove business pretty lively recent
ly. They keep popular makes and
sell at reasonable figures.
In the list of jurors for 1900,
published last week, the name
"Neal Neal" of Newport occurred
instead of W. Neal. We apologize.
Divine service will be held in
Johns church on Sunday, 21st, at 11
a. tu. and 7:30 p. in. Sunday school
at 10 a. in. A most cordial invita
tion to all.
II. Denlinger, sr., came in from
his ranch a few days ago and is
now at the Vin.'t.-nt ILmscand very
much under the weather. His
