The question to what extent the alkaline earth salts in drinking water affect the decay (caries) of teeth has of late been studied in several quarters. Statistics have been collected by Rese in several localities in Bavaria and by Foerberg, in Sweden. These have re vealed the interesting fact that the extent of decaying teeth bears a definite relation to the hardness of the water; in other words, to the quantity of cal cium and magnesium salts in the earth through which the water passes.
