Address All Communications to COOS IJAY DAILY TIMES Marshflcld Orogon THE TIME TO BUILD. Ignorance on the part of an indi vidual, community, state or a na tion may not be excused when every facility and every opportunity exists for its removal. Just now the building trade of the United States is unsatisfactory be cause of the general indifference or neglect of the business educational factors. Tho time to build is when material and labor can be secured on most advantageous terms. That time is now. Ignorance of the present unusual opportunities and the failure to take advantage of conditions which may aot again present themselves for years, are inexcusable.' This Ignorance is due to careless ness, negligence or overslnght on the part of commercial educators, as stated. It should be charged up to the shortcomings of lumbermen, dealers in hardware, real estate men, bankers, commercial organizations, and industrial associations. The press of the country occa sionally prints an article setting forth the advantages which builders may derive, but no systematic cam paign for the enlightenment of the people who are in a position to build ever has been launched. Now is the time to build. This coun try Is suffering, if at all, with sup pressed enthusiasm. The warehouses are full; stocks of lumber, building hardware, lime cement and all other classes of building material are more than sufficient to supply the present demands. Nominally some manu facturers of building materials have not lowered their prices, but in every line, owing to the slack demand, dealers are willing to make conces sions to secure business. This Is truo of the glass makers, lumber men, hardware dealers, brick and stone men and of producers of al most every article that enters into the construction of dwellings, ware houses and office buildings. It is true in every line of Industry In the United States and each par ticular department of trade is wait ing for something to start. Now Is the time to start it. The reason haB been stated and may be reiterated. Material and labor can be secured on more advantageous terms now than at any other time within the last five years, and probably more cheaply than will be possible at any time after 1908. Mills and factories are being op- orated under reduced schedule. Some of them are closed down entirely. The workmen who manned these Institutions are Idle; some of them are walking tho streets looking for employment. They are able and an xious to work and under the present conditions will give greater and hot ter service in oxchango for less mon ey now than they have beon accus tomed to give in tho past. Money Is easier. A Chicago bank has just issued this statoment: "We made a real estate loan late in May at 41& per cent and sold it three days after wo made it. We are making lonns every day at 5 per cent and that will be tho current rate very soon. Lumbor is now being offered at prices which appear ridiculously low when compared with market values last year. Whoro tho man ufacturer or tho dealer refuses to make heavy concessions In prices somo ono elso willing to do so steps In nnd tnkes tho trado. This year a great deal of lumber has been sold at prices that did not yield sufflclont to cover tho actual cost of producing tho stock This, of course, has not beon tho case gen erally, but the lumber trado, so far this year, has beon conducted on about tho samo basis as tho buslnoss and MAKE GOOD. Make good. Cut out "If," "could," and "should." And start In to saw wood. You can still have the best Things in life, like the rest Of the men who've achieved Just because they've believed In themselves. You're deceived If you think fortune comes With a rattle of drums And a fanfare of state To hand yours on a plate. That isn't the way That she visits today. You must get out and rustle bustle and hustle; You need all your muscle, for you've got to tussle, Plunge into the fight, Hit to left and to right, And keep crashing and smashing. Don't let up with your striking Till things meet your liking. For God's sake, stop bawling Instead, do some mauling. It makes the world bitter To look at a quitter; Fate scowls when she sees A grown-up on his knees. A man with his health Is a mine jammed with wealth Full of unexplored lodes, Why, the freckled-back toads Have the sense to keep jumping nd here you are trumping! Some now, strike your gait It Isn't too late, There's no such thing as fate! Dfop that fool-talk of "luck," Get a grip on your pluck, And buck. Begin To gin And win. HERBERT KAUFMAN. A girl generally loses confidence in herself If she falls to make a fool of a man after she has met him the third time. When a jeweler marries he usual ly selects a solid gold movement, ad- Justed to heat and cold, with about thirty jewels. Did you ever notice it? A real scientist now declares that mosquitoes and whisky cause more I trouble than anything else on earth. Where does woman, lovely woman, come in? "Ma!" Well, dear?" "Does th' Bible honestly say that we gotta love our enemies?" "Yes." "Gee!" "What's tho matter?" "I I whist I'd 'a- picked some diff'rent enemies." Once on a time, runs a modern fable which appears in an exchange, a youth about to embark on the -3ea of matrimony went to his father and said: "Father, who should be boss, I or my wife?" The old man smiled and said: "Here are one hundred hens and a team of horses. Hitch up the horses, load the hens Into the wagon, and wherever you find a man and his wife dwelling, stop and make in quiry as to who Is the boss. Where ever you find a woman running things, leave a hen. If you come to a place where a man is in control, give him one of the horses." After seventy-nine hens had been disposed of, he came to a house and made the usual inquiry. "I'm boss o' this ranch," said the man. So the wife was called, and she ree ays A GREAT SEASONABLE SALE OF MEN'S SUITS FOR SATURDAY, .MONDAY AND TUESDAY. 75 HANDSOME NEW SUITS AT GREATLY REDUCED PRICES. A Coos Bay man was giving a re ception, and the conversation turned upon the subject of losing money. Mrs. Brown had lost some bills which of the man who trades a dollar for 100 cents. Fir lumber is selling at $4.00 per 1000 less than last year, sash and doors are 25 per cent below last years level, brick is $10 and $12 per 1000 instead of $22 and all other materials In proportion. These prices are figured on the basis of the Coos Bay market. Prices ot millwork are on approx imately the same footing. Other kinds ot building material also are being offered at bargain prices. In some sections of the country building has been good but as a whole It is far from satisfactory. Its sluggishness may be traced largely to the Ignorance of the peo ple who are able to build and who do not appreciate or do not know of present advantages. A moment's reflection could con vince anyone that It Is a pretty safe thing to buy at prices which repre sent merely tho cost of production. It is Incumbent upon those who handle building material to acquaint the trade with those facts. Soon the railroads and other heavy consumers must come into the market and tho Instant they do prices nro going to advance 10 to 25 per cent, and the Individual who de layed building In the hope of secur ing oven better terms Is going to be left. Dealers in building material, lum ber organizations, commercial asso ciations, banks and others who are Interested in having tho people it work, doing something for them selves nnd adding to tho physlial properties of tho nation, shou' I co operate In presenting this question to tho peoplo of tho country through tho medium of tho dally press, per iodicals of all classes and trado pub llcotlons, acquainting tho peoplo who do not know or who nro hesitating with tho present state of affairs and Impressing upon them tho great sav ing which can bo made by those who build whon building can bo done most cheaply nnd most satisfactorily. "Take whichever horse you want," was the boy's reply. So the husband replied, "I'll take the bay." But the wife did not like the bay horse, and called her husband aside and talked to him. He returned and said: "I believe I'll take the gray horse." "Not much," said the young man. "You get a hen." Through praise of Mammon, man has failed To know that "MAN" means "ALL is ONE" Thus baser motives have prevailed, Since private ownership begun. There is no "gift" of man's Salva tion, Man must achieve his highest aim Within Man's breast an emulation Invites all Good, disdains all blame. Man stands erect a demonstration Of law fulfilled, tho law of Love. Man Is one grand Divine relation, All ' Man In Brotherhood shall move. Man must not be by strife divided, Man shall no longer war through fear; Self-will shall cease, Love has de cided; Man's love for man draws Heaven near. When man shall seek for God-like Power That power tho "I AM" holds within, That goal we reach In "Silent Hour," Above all hate, where hopes be gin 'Tls there man finds the life worth living; There man communes with Life Supreme. Man's Inner self does nil forgiving. Man, hold thyself In full esteem. Man Is debauched by creeds frater nnls, Man's inner solf loves only good; By seeking gods from man external Man alms below Man's Brother hood. Through knowing Self, man learns of Heaven, Knows 5t Is hero, not realms above, Man needs no laws that men have given; THERE IS NO BINDING LAW BUT LOVE. C. A. It may not be popular at a time when military and naval budgets nro being considered to call attention to the great achievements of tho second peace conference at The Hague, but for my part I could not imagine a more appropriate time to do so in fact, I hold it to be our solemn duty before voting away the people's money to carefully con sider actual necessities, especially at a time when the REVENUES, BOTH INTERNAL AND CUSTOMS, ARE FALLING OFF and every dollar wo can spare is badly needed for the erection of buildings to house the growing federal service and for the IM PBOVEMENT OF THE WATERWAYS of the country. And tho actual necessities for military and naval armaments have certainly been lessened by Tho Hague agreements. t . STOUGH. 4 Unless wo are all in ignorance as to the truo situation and it is incredible that the mikado's representatives should misrepresent it to us a simple agreement to arbitrate differences and to mutually guar antee territorial integrity and undisputed home sovereignty would EFFECTUALLY DISPOSE OF THE JAPANESE QUESTION FOR ALL TIME TO COME, and not a single battleship will bo needed to secure the benefits of such a treaty. Under tho circumstances T believe every member of tho house to bo justified, from tho standpoint of international obligations as well as that of national security and national honor, in declining to go beyond the naval programme as agreed upon at the two sessions of tho last congress. Contrary to common report, I am by no moans a sentimentalist on this question. My courso was as practical as the demands of natri- I otism and the necessities of my country dictated, and I repeat what x sam in uio uegmning, that, as in tho past, I am ready to support President Roosevelt's policy announced a year ago namely ONE BATTLESHIP ANNUALLY, which, to use his own language, means no enlargement of tho navy, but merely "enables us to keep up our strength and make good the units which become obsolete."
