PORTLAND, June 23. The Tele gram says: "While bound from Coos Bay to Portland Wednesday, tho steamer Alliance, Captain Olson, sighted the schooler Ida Schnauer about a mile to the south of Tilla mook bar, several hours before she went ashore. Tho captain says that she did not appear to be in a dan gerous position when he passed, and ho paid no particular attention to her. Farther up tho coast, near tho point at which the British bark Ga lena wont ashoro two years ago, an other schooner was sighted by tho Alliance. She was drifting in with tho tide. Fearing that she was go ing to bo wrecked, Captain Olson changed his courso and started to go to her assistance. Before reaching her, however, tho tug Wallula arriv ed on the scene to take tho craft in charge, and tho Alliance resumed the voyage to tho Columbia river. Tho schooner was either tho Anoy Maho ney or tho Alvena, both of which ar rived at Astoria yesterday afternoon. There were light, baffling and variable winds on tho outside and occasional fog, which gave the mari ners on sailing vessels near the coast all they could do to keep their craft headed in the. right course. It is declared that every little while tho fog would get so denso as to make it impossible to see a ship's length ahead. Then tho fog would lift a short distance and hang almost as low as tho tops of tho masts. Tho wind would shift to all points of tho compass, but it seldom blow very strong. Tho atmosphoric conditions aro described as having been most peculiar. A big consignment of doors and sashes was brought on the Alliance for shipment to points in tho interior. Sho also had a full list of passengers. The locomotlvo she took to Marsh fleld on her last trip was placed on tho track 48 hours after tho steam er had sailed from Portland." The Tribune says: Joo Zwelfel, a German who resides near Harbor visited our burg last Tuesday when ho informed us of a thrilling en counter with a black bear. Mr. Zwel fel's description of tho encounter is as follows: At about 10 o'clock, Monday night he states that ho heard a scratching at his smoke house door. Mr. Z. thought at first it might be a stray dog, not dreaming of It being a bear. Taking his big shotgun down he told his wife, "if I catch dat tarn dog I will give him a charge of shot." As ho drew near the smoke house ho observed a dark animal just as he entered tho door. He raised his gun for some reason It snapped. Ho then gave it a tre mendous kick in tho rear. Tho bear whirled and seized him and ' com menced hugging him. His lusty yells soon brought his faithful wife to tho rescue, armed with a tea ket tle of boiling water (that being a woman's weapon.) Sho dashed a largo quantity of tho water on the bear's back, and it being a little too warm a climate for bruin, lie releas ed his grip on 'his would bo victim and suddenly fled for parts unknown. This may seem to bo a pretty big bear story l)ut it Is vouched for tho truth by both Mr. and Mrs. Zweifel, REBMEN'S HALL at I. O. O. F. Hall, Saturday evening, Juno 27, by Koos- Trlbo No. 33.
