' THE DAILY COOS BAY TIMES, MARSHFIELD. OREGON, THURSDAY, APRIL 2, 1908. WILL IMPROVE W Chamber of Commerce will Discuss Matter at Meeting Friday Evening. WHAT TIIKV SAY POLITICAL ADVERTISING. "I am having some pamphlets printed to advertise the Coos Day country and think they will bo very line.' said J. W. Dennett, who has been a Coos Day booster for thirty years and more, today. "I have secured some Rood views of Marshfleld, the surroundings towns and the country and will Illustrate the pamphlets OLD MACK At Friday night's meeting of th Chamber of Commerce, steps will b taken to secure the improvement tho Marshfleld waterfront. The e ccuttve committee of the organlz; tlon has retermined that this is a important matter towards furtherln Marshfleld and Coos Day. It is fri posed to discuss the matter fully an outllno a program for doing tho work. One of the important things to be done In this connection, according to tho members of the executive com mittee, is to clear the streets leading to the water front. The piling of material, empty boxes, etc., will be tabooed. Another will be to secure the prop erty owners to co-operate and fix up tho rear of their buildings, making them as presentable practically as tho fronts. Secretary Lyons says that this Is Important because so many people who come on boats form their Impression of the town by the appearance of the water front. At a meeting to be hold this after noon, a speaker or speakers will be selected to address Friday night's meeting on tho subject and to lead tho discussion. In this connection, tho paving of Front street may also be taken up and resolutions adopted urging early action to secure 'tho improvement. f -ff. -M5JsHM i jXSBttBBSSuSSmmmBSSSSmmmmM BASEBALL MEN WILL "Marshfleld might get some point ers from Dolse, Idaho, that would prove decidedly beneficial In imirov Ir.u tho city," remarked City En gineer Sandberg this morning. "Sev eral years ago, they elected a well known man as mayor. He started on at onco to improve the city. He had sidewalks, paving and sewer ordered. Many remonstrated for a while and attempted to prevent him carrying out his plans but he didn't waiver. Ho made such a success of th" work that was done that it "was on'y a year or two until tho ci"y council was recorring so many petition-! from property owners, for pub lic improvements that they could hardly attend to them. As a result, r!olp Is a pretty town today and' has trebled In population in six or eight years." F. A. SACCIU'S POSITION. Editor Times: In last night's paper, I noticed an artlclo wherein you represent me as tho authority on flho 'Front Street Improvement PROBABLY MEET SUNDAY SSL,-' Tbef tLS arTfn error. I am not the authority on any improvements nor an agitator. Mr. Howard proposes to get tho managers ogether that day in order to seo tho workout at North Dend and also because it will bo moro convenient for most of ('them than any other day. , LEE WEBSTER WRITES TO OLD COMRADES. JJinpiro Man's Communication Hc viyes Art of Letter Writing and Itoosts Coos Hay. That letter writing is not a lost art is proven by tho interesting ml3 sivo which Leo Webster of Empire bus just written to eoiiio of his old comrades in tho "Tho Pride of Mass achussottts, the 13th. Itoglment." It is a classic of Its kind and tho Times publication. Altho personal it is regrets that opaco alono prevents Its of general Interest in showing what un interesting lotter may bo written from Coob, Day to old friends. After a brief introduction hf a personal naturo the letter goes on: "Mjjf experience in tho cllmo in J rv5ibvTOU live warrants tho assump V nion that you aro now entering up on your spring season and byv tho tinio this reaches you that nature will have begun to take on her prottlest garb. This is followed with a glowing description of North Dend and Marbhlleld which Indicnto that -Leo Webster possesses tho gonuino Coos Day booster spirit. Republican Candidate for U. S. Senator Staunch Support er of Statement No. 1. Antagonistic to the verge of bit terness remnants of tho old machine which once dominated Oregon poli tics have taken up tho fight for tho defeat of Statement No. 1 and all who favor that method. In Portland and In other larger cities of the State, tho machine crowd is centering its fight upon II. M. Cake, candidate for tho Republican nomination for United States senator. Mr. Cake is a firm believer in the popuiar election of United States sen ators and because of his belief In the people, has incurred the enmity of the old machine politicians. Those who aro close to the situation, how ever, believe that the machine fight against Mr. Cake, is the best thing that could happen for his campaign. Tho people of Oregon expressed I by their adoption of tho primary law and Statement No. i, what they thought of machine methods. The old system had brought shamo and disgrace unon the State had made tho city of Salem almost a Gomor rah in the way of political wicked ness. Periodicals and newspapers of national circulation pointed to our State as one of sodden political cor ruption, of disgraceful scandals. It is in thai hope of reviving this old method by" tho defeat of State ment No. 1 and of Mr. Cake, that the machine politicians have started such a bitter crusade against this now law. Indeed, it is their only hope. Under the present system, they are without a job. Evidences of this hostility on tho part of the "system" havo been ap parent In various towns where Mr. Cake has spoken during his present itinerary. Large crowds nave flocked to hear him, but conspicuous by their Civic Improvement League will be Started to Improve City's Appearances. "Marshfleld beautiful" will be slogan of a Civic Improvement League which will shortly be launch ed under tho auspices of the Marsh fleld Chamber of Commerce. In ad dition to the general campaign which It is proposed to inaugurate for beau tifying and improving the city, it is proposed to fix upon a "clean-up day" when everyono will get busy and cooperate towards improving tho out ward appearances of the streets, lawns, etc. It is proposed to call upon the women of Marshfleld for assistance In accomplishing the work. It is believed that they will be better able to contribute ideas to be workel out and suggesting means of accom plishing the purpose than will tho men. It is possible also that an effort will be made to enlist the aid of tho school children in the project. In. fact, it is proposed to take in every-1 one and then "Do things." ,J It has not been determined when' the first meeting will be called to per- i feet the organization of tho Civic Im-; provement League but it will be soon and tho call will probably. bo made by the executive committee of the Chamber of Commerce through Sec retary Walter Lyon. absence, were the old-time leaders. And in this connection it is a fact worth mentioning that most of these antagonistic politicians are either of fice holders or have some claim upon those who aro at present in office. Tho people who are rallying to Mr. Cake's standard aro those Repub licans who are Intensely loyal to their party but who resent any such dic tatorial methods as the old machine was won't to use. It is a foregone conclusion that Statement No. 1 will prevail in Ore gon at the coming election. It Is also a foregone conclusion that Mr. Cake, the only real active supporter of this measure will be elected if the Republican voters of this State do their duty and there Is no room for doubt but that they will perform that duty. -57" Machines and many oLher kind of Washers $5.50 to $12.50 New Home Sewing Machines $20 to $35 Needles to fit any Machine Milner s Hardware ssssstssmsiBsssssiSMEaBSSEa WaBraOSBHSaB&XlKEISZSEX New Methods in a Model Market AAAAwAAAAAwvvvv wwvwavvvvanaaV7wwa .
