OLD MACK
At Friday night's meeting of th
Chamber of Commerce, steps will b
taken to secure the improvement
tho Marshfleld waterfront. The e
ccuttve committee of the organlz;
tlon has retermined that this is a
important matter towards furtherln
Marshfleld and Coos Day. It is fri
posed to discuss the matter fully an
outllno a program for doing tho
work.
One of the important things to be
done In this connection, according to
tho members of the executive com
mittee, is to clear the streets leading
to the water front. The piling of
material, empty boxes, etc., will be
tabooed.
Another will be to secure the prop
erty owners to co-operate and fix up
tho rear of their buildings, making
them as presentable practically as
tho fronts. Secretary Lyons says
that this Is Important because so
many people who come on boats form
their Impression of the town by the
appearance of the water front.
At a meeting to be hold this after
noon, a speaker or speakers will be
selected to address Friday night's
meeting on tho subject and to lead
tho discussion.
In this connection, tho paving of
Front street may also be taken up
and resolutions adopted urging early
action to secure 'tho improvement.

Antagonistic to the verge of bit
terness remnants of tho old machine
which once dominated Oregon poli
tics have taken up tho fight for tho
defeat of Statement No. 1 and all
who favor that method.
In Portland and In other larger
cities of the State, tho machine crowd
is centering its fight upon II. M.
Cake, candidate for tho Republican
nomination for United States senator.
Mr. Cake is a firm believer in the
popuiar election of United States sen
ators and because of his belief In
the people, has incurred the enmity
of the old machine politicians. Those
who aro close to the situation, how
ever, believe that the machine fight
against Mr. Cake, is the best thing
that could happen for his campaign.
Tho people of Oregon expressed
I by their adoption of tho primary law
and Statement No. i, what they
thought of machine methods. The
old system had brought shamo and
disgrace unon the State had made
tho city of Salem almost a Gomor
rah in the way of political wicked
ness. Periodicals and newspapers of
national circulation pointed to our
State as one of sodden political cor
ruption, of disgraceful scandals.
It is in thai hope of reviving this
old method by" tho defeat of State
ment No. 1 and of Mr. Cake, that
the machine politicians have started
such a bitter crusade against this now
law. Indeed, it is their only hope.
Under the present system, they are
without a job. It is impossible for

"Marshfleld beautiful" will be

dition to the general campaign which
It is proposed to inaugurate for beau

proposed to fix upon a "clean-up day"
when everyono will get busy and
cooperate towards improving tho out

upon the women of Marshfleld for
assistance In accomplishing the work.
It is believed that they will be better
able to contribute ideas to be workel

It is possible also that an effort
will be made to enlist the aid of tho
school children in the project. In.

It has not been determined when'

And in this connection it is a fact
worth mentioning that most of these
antagonistic politicians are either of
fice holders or have some claim upon
those who aro at present in office.
Tho people who are rallying to Mr.
Cake's standard aro those Repub
licans who are Intensely loyal to their
party but who resent any such dic
tatorial methods as the old machine
was won't to use.
It is a foregone conclusion that
Statement No. 1 will prevail in Ore
gon at the coming election. It Is also
a foregone conclusion that Mr. Cake,
the only real active supporter of
this measure will be elected if the
Republican voters of this State do
their duty and there Is no room for
doubt but that they will perform
that duty.
