Under a recent decision of tho Orogon supremo court, tho county as- NEW HOTEL IS DISCUSSED Old Timer No. 2 Upholds Build- ' ers, While "Stockholder" ' Criticises Delay. Editor Times: You, of course, should print all sides of a question, so you may un derstand I don't blame you for print ing tho letter of "Old Time Resident" on tho hotel question. Old Time Res ident Is to blame for uttering his thoughts. He can not know what difficulties are in the way of building a hotel. If ho did ho would havo re mained silent and allowed tho hotel plans to take their course. Is not Old Time Resident ono of a factioa which opposes tho building of a ho tel on C. Btreet? Is he not ono of a class which has made so many hotel failures? There are a number of reasons why the hotel has not been built. It was decided upon too late last summer to begin, and In tho winter it has not been expedient. Tho plans of the nr chltect have not been ready. Ma terial has been too costly. There has been a financial stress. This is what tho Interested parties tell me. Old Tlmo Resident, like many of his kind, is Impatient when waiting for some body else to move, but fearfully pa tient when somebody else Is waltlns for him. Ho has been hero a Ion? time. Why didn't he build a hotel before? Why didn't ho fix up the streets? Why didn't he do a little paving? Criticism from an Old Tlm Resident who probably wants a hotel on his own high-priced lot and won't call anything a hotel unless it S3 there, is uncalled for. I havo lived in this city a long tlmo, probably as long as Old Tlmo Resident, and I don't care who builds tho hotel, ex cept that I don't believe It best to spoil tho plan to build the C street hotel by jumping on It too soon. Wo can't tell whether tho hotel is really needed yet. If It is completed in olghteon months or two years we will know better whether It is a good in vestment. We who havo lived a long time on tho Bay know how such things go, and that It is best not to be in a hurry. Even if tho hotel should not be built for five years, It would beat your correspondent's rec ord all hollow. OLD TIME RESIDENT NO. 2. Tho Other Side. Editor Times: I am a new comer and am inter ested in a hotel for Marshfleld be cause I havo property hero and be cause I live here. I expect to llo here and, In time, become an OH Time Resident. I subscribed monpy for tho now hotel and paid In twenty flvo per cent. If I could I would an swer Old Time Resident, but I can't And out anything at all, and can't learn what Is going on oven by ask ing questions of tho president rhd directors of tho project. When I put up my money I was told that there would be a stockholders' meeting in six months. Thero hasn't been nny called, and nobody seems to know what will bo done. I heard that Mr. Lockhart was In San Francisco and Mr. Chandler said tho hotel would bo built when tho architect's plans were ready. I heard that tho plans wero ready some tlmo ago. I also heard that tho plans wero not qulto as de sired. There has been a long tlmo to correct them, and I can't see anything In that view. I hopo this hotel won't vanish into hot air. Thero are hot air hotels all around tho bay, but I put my money Into this ono becauso I thought tho peoplo who woro at tho bond of It wore not hot air peoplo. I don't want to bollovo it now, but I would like to learn somehow what's what and when it will work out. As I can't And out anything by asking questions, I can't give Old Tlmo Resi dent any bettor answer. STOCKHOLDER. scssors havo been assessing it on tho net earnings In addition to the prop erty owned by it. Of courso tho tax on tho latter is trivial, and tho com pany has been paying It, but refuses to pay on tho not earnings. A test caso will probably bo mado at Roso burg. Tlmo to liny Sugar. F. S. Dow, tho local represontatlvo of tho Hono lulu Plantation company has. ro cplved word of n morry war botweon the sugar growers, of which his firm is one, and tho sugar trust. Tho prlco of Hiigar is now about sixty cants por hundred lower. A btill further de cline may como in a day or two if tho differences tiro npt abjustod but it is not belioved that tho prlco war will continue long. Phono 2011 for spring Lima.
