fJ&'.t".y''r?Wi K r it THE DAILY COOS MY TIMES, MARSHFIELD, OREGON, THURSDAY, MARCH 191908;, WM. BETTJS I Well Known Pioneer of Coos County Succumbs to At tack of Pneumonia. "William Bettls, a resident of Coos county for about thirty years, and one of the best known citizens of Falrvlow, died Wednesday March 18, of pneumonia. He was about C8 years old. Mr. Bettls came hero from Canada and settled on a farm, clearing the timber off tho tract and converting It Into one of tho prettiest and most productful tracts In this section. A hard worker, progressive and abso lutely honest, his death will bo mourned by all who know him. Ho Is survived by a wlfo and four children, one son, Harald, having been killed in a log jam several years ago. Tho living children are: Mrs. It. J. Coke, of North Bend; Mrs. J. J. Clinkenbeard; William Bettls and Al bert Bettls, of Falrvlow. Tho funeral arrangements have not Tjeen announced. CONTRACT TO PLANK FAIRVIEW ROAD LET County Court Awards Highway Im provement Job and Starts Campaign. The county court has awarded tho contract for regradlng tho Falrvlew road to tho county farm road to J. M. and A. G. Barker. Vern Barker secured tho contract for planking tho road and has ordered a portable . sawmill from Portland with which to saw out the timbers. Ho expects to begin planking tho road by July 1 One owning a portablo sawmill should bo able to secure many con tracts in this county for planking roads. This Is thought by many to Tjo tho best means to permanently improve tho thoroughfares of this county. In many places there Is enough timber on tho right of way and In others there aro ranchers and others who would bo only too willing to donate tho necessary timber for i such purposes, as they aro willing to do most anything to havo good j roads. Thero aro many miles of i road thnt can bo planked, rocked or giaveled without hauling tho mater ial any great dlstanco, and If tho supervisors will use tho material closest at hand for road purposes they will bo ablo to build good sub stantial roads at a ilguro that will bo satisfactory to tho taxpayers of tho road districts.
