Tho Illuminating Engineering So ciety of Chicago held a mooting tho other day nnd Invited n number of oculists to bo present and tell them what they, had discovered In latter day methods of lighting dwellings, offices and stores. They wcro In formed by the eye-doctors that tholwith his fnthor in his gasoline boat, much-talked-of advance in methods b' belnS thrown onto the engine as of Illumination introduced in tho last,1110 l,oat camo I" contact with an century had beou in many ways a ret rograde moveniout. Tho doctors strongly condemned the incandescent light bulbs anil as afrougly recommended tho old-timo kerosene lamp of our fathers. Ac cording to tho authorities represented at tills nicotine our country leads tho world In tho brilliancy of its illu mination, and it also loads tho world In ocular exhaustion, discomfort and congestion. AVhen gas carao Into general uso these troubles began to increase, and a further lucreaso was evidenced when tho incandescent electric light becanio tho fashion all ovor the laud. Both In Amorlca and the, European countries tho oculists agreo that tho old korosono lamp is tho least nariu ful artificial llluniinant and it Is al leged that tho incandescent lamp has given riso to more chronic eyo degen eration than any other light used for night work. All tho doctors said that tho Incan descent light could bo made with a llttlo trouble as harmless as tho kor osono light, but nobody sems to want to tako tho trouble, Tho de- ma ml is for moro nnd brighter lights and tho whole troublo is with tho eyes and not with tho light. Tho il lumination is ontiroly too bright and will in tlino lead to partial, if not totnl blindness. Everybody hns noticed tho groat lncrcaso in tho nunibor of peoplo who nro using glasses during tho past few years. Tills Is true particularly with tho young. Whllo no doubt a portion of this Is due to tho fact that many adopt tho uso of glHses be c&UBO they have an Idea that thoy add dignity to their appearance, tho ma jority nro using thorn through necess ity. It is mattor which Is growing upon us as a people, and is really alarming. Janios Cole, former assistant United Stntoa nttornoy for Oregon, is in tho rnco to socuro the republican nomination for nud consequent olec tlon to tho office of prosecuting at torney for tho Fourth Judicial dis trict to succeed John Manning, tho present Incumbent. WAN! MAILS HERE ON TIME Coos Bay Pushes Crusade to Secure Prompt Service, but Encounters Red Tape. Sec. Walter Lyon of tho Marsh fleld Chamber of Commerce Is push ing tho movement to secure better mail service for Coos Bay and Coos County. The long delays In tho ar rival of the malls day after day with scarcely a gleam of hope that some bright day they may arrive on time has almost driven Postmaster W. B. Curtis and the citizens frantic. North Bend, Myrtlo Point and Coqulllo are having the same experience, and are anxious to aid Marshfleld In the cam paign. Recently Mr. Lyon took tho mat te up with tho postofflco department which Informed him that Postmaster C. W. Park3 of Roseburg could ad just it, there being a rule whereby ho should require the driver of tho mail coach to swear that ho would deliver it on schedule time before turning tho mail over to him. Mr. Lyon called this to Mr. Parks' at tention and has received a reply from him. Mr. Parks says that the govern ment allows only $32.79 for a round trip between Roseburg and Coos Bay, tl'at he Is aware that Contractor Fen ton is not doing the work on time but says ho is powerless. lie says tlw c Ik- tried to get other to try tho work but could not do so for tho money paid. Mr. Lyon has forwarded this to tho postofflco department at Washington and it is expected that the situation will bo remedied shortly. ACCIDENTS NEAR COQUILLE. DEMAND FOR INFORMATION Announcement in Portland Papers Inundated Him AVith Inquiries "Will Open Clothing Store Here. "The Coos Bay boosters should open a publicity and Information bu reau in Portland at least, and In other gate cities of the west If possi ble," said J. L. Bowman, of Portland, ono of tho builders of tho new Coos building, who is already extensively identified with tho commercial inter ests here, and who is in Marshfleld arranging for tho acceptance of tho new structure from the contractors and for starting his high grade retail clothing store In the new building hero May 1. "Coos Bay has been well advertised and hundreds of people are anxious to find out something about it, but can't. You know they come into Portland from all over, expecting to get information there as to the best place for them to locate. Well, Port land people seem to know Coos Bay is a good place, but are not acquaint ed with tho details a prospective resi dent wants to know. As an Indica tion of this, I will cito you my own experience. I ran a couple of ads in the Portland papers about Marshfleld and Coos Bay in order to get tenants for the new Coos building. The day after tho ad appeared I had at least one hundred inquiries about it. They came in person, telephoned and -wrote. Of course I couldn't do anything but boost Coos Bay by mere ly telling them the plain facts about Its prospects." Mr. Bowman's new clothing estab lishment will In Its appointments and tho class and character of the goods handled be equal to any in the state of Oregon. It will occupy tho cor ner store room in tho new Coos building, which has been especially fitted up for it. The floor of polished hardwood is only a detail of the care that was given in having 'it finished and fitted up In the most modern and up-to-date manner. In addition to tho popular priced line of Oregon clothing made by tho Brownsville Woolen Mills, that havo a reputation all over tho west, Mr. Bowman will also carry a high grade lino of strictly hand tailored clothing that will be made especially for his Coos Bay Store In a factory in which he i3 per sonally interested in New York City. Mr. Bowman lias demonstrated his qualifications in tho clothing lino by establishing tho largest retail cloth-1 ing business in Portland, as well as j conducting an extensive wholesale clothing establishment that supplies over three hundred merchants in Ore gon and on the Pacific coast. Mr. Bowman Is exclusive agont for tho Brownsville and Salem Woolen Mills, handling tho entire output of their factories. "I am also interested in a Now York tailoring and clothing estao lishment which makes a specialty of flno clothing," remarked Mr. Bow man to a Times reporter, "and I am going tliero tomorrow to select a lino of high grade goods of strictly up-to-dato styles for tho now Coos Bay Store, and which will bo mado up ex clusively for this place." "Tho now store will bo handsomely furnished throughout, nnd it is my aim to make It tho best In this sec tion of Oregon. I have great confi dence in tho future of Coos Bay, and realize that in order to keep apace with or ahead of tho rapid growth and development hero I must put in only tho best."
