The passage of tho death sentenco on General Stoessel has given but little satisfaction in tho Russian capital where it is felt that tho trial of Stoessel, Tock, Reiss and Smyrnoff has done practically nothing in es tablishing thuorcal responsibility for the fall of Port Arthur. Two young women from Gardiner, on tho Umpqua river, have forsaken their homes for tho faclnations of city life. Cora Caldwell and Ella Schilling ran away Tuesday, taking 'tho stage line to Marshfleld, arriv ing here Wednesday morning. They departed on tho Alliance for Port land, Wednesday afternoon, going under the aliases of Bessie Wells and Alice Hayes. Ella Schilling is but IS years of ago and it is the suppo sition that tho older girl prevailed upon her to leave home. Miss Schil ling's father works in the flour mill of the Gardiner Milling company. As soon as ho became aware of his daughter's departure ho notified Constable Smith, of Gardiner, and tho latter arrived on Coos Bay Thurs day only to find that ho was a day lato. It is not thought that any fur ther effort will bo made to appre hend the girls. MIDNIGHT CLOSING ORDINANCE IN EFFECT Every Saloon In Marshfleld Closed Its Doors Last Night on tho Stroke of 12. When the man in the moon looked down on Marshfleld last night the gonial smile, with which he has been wont to acknowledge tho greetings of his many friends for tho last 40 years, soon faded away and over his face there came a look of chilled surprise and dismay. Front street pressnted a scene of desolation. To bo suro tho saloons were lighted but only with ono incandescent and this in order that the night officer might look through the raised blind and see that tho owner was observ ing tho midnight closing ordinance. Certainly thero was the same old crowd of wights as of yore, but the bewildered eyes of the moonraan noted that they were everyone In a beastly sober condition. Gono was tho grapevine walk, missing was the man who used to cling In loving embrace to tho sign post in front of John Prouss' drug store; in their stoad was a lino of pedestrians walk ing slowly but surefootedly, though apparently uncortain as to destina natlon. A delightful evening was passed at the North Bend Commercial club last night tho occasion being ladies' night. "500" and bridge whist were played. In the "500" games tho first prizes were won by Colonel Brlgham and Mrs. Burmester and the consola tion prizes by Dr. Gale and Miss Jennie Curran. A novel diversion was afforded by each guest being handed a slip with a topic on which the guest was supposed to speak for five minutes. Yoakum Submits Some Extracts of Especial Interest Jlere. Mrs. S. A. Yoakas, dairy and food commissioner of Coos county, yesterday submitted to Tho Times tho following state rules and regulations pertaining" to tho caro of dairies.. She believes there are a great many dairymen around the country who aro unfamiliar with these laws and as the state expects to enforce their ob servance they should be familiarized by all who are engaged in tho pursuit of dairying. "To tho Dairymen of Coos county, Ore. "That all barns where milch cows are kept, or used for milking barns, must be whitewashed twice a year. and a quantity of Umo kept on hand with which to sprinkle your stable floors after cleaning, and also to put In tho gutters. When cows are kept by any person or persons for dairy purposes, either for butter or for cheese or for tho production of milk or cream for sale, and aro confined in stables, such cows so confined shall each bo allowed eight hundred cubic feet of air space, and such cows so stabled shall not bo confined fac ing each other closer than ton feet. AGED MINISTER DIES Oldest Presbyterian Preacher on Pa cific Coast Passes Away. (By Associated Press.) SEATTLE, Feb. 21. Rev. Benj. Tho colling and sides of tho barn should be swept absolutely clean, and then a coat of whitewash applied as often as necessary to keep tho sta blo sweet and clean. Directions for mixing out Bide: To half a bucket ful of unslaked limo add two hand fuls of common salt and soft soap at tho rate of 1 pound to 15 gallons of tho wash. Slako slowly stirring all tho tlmo. This quantity makes two buckotfuls of a very adhesive wash which Is not affected by rain. "Inside: Slako llmo with water and add" sufficient skimmed milk to bring it to tho consistency of thin cream. To each gallon add ono ounco of salt and two ounces of brown sugar dissolved in water. Tho germ icidal values of theso receipts may bo increased by adding three fourths of a pound of chloride of llmo to every 30 gallons of whitewash.
