Professor Norton of Yale Univer sity, 1b an authority on Political iicoziowy, whoso prominence is sec ond to none. In n recent paper pre jtiuruU by him the present financial Icpr8ion was considered and some remarkable conclusions were reached. 2lu called attention to the fact that in 1S0U the world's output of gold Jiv tli year had reached the extra ordinary sum of $205,000,000. Kach y'nr since 19 00 the increase in the uAjiul of the mines has been such hat In 1900 the quantity mined was valued at $100,000,000. This flood of gold was startling, but, in fast, it huh. In hib judgment, nothing to the Yoluoiu which was yet to come.i Pro fessor Norton believes in the quanti tative theory of money as do all KconHflc economists and financiers, Jiml he recognizes the fact that the value of gold depreciates in propor tion as the supply Increases. Hut tills depreciation can only bo detect ed in the increase in the value of what old buys. When prices go up tlio purchasing power of gold lias di vtalsaed. And Professor Norton jropjuecies that prices will, in spite of the llnancial set-hack, still continue .La rlao and that in the next throe .yours the cost of living will increase thirty per cent. Tills leads to the conclusion that men can not afford to retain their money, but, in order . to InkD advantage of tho cheapening , oC .gold and tho increase of property wuliies, they must invest in property. They must buy. . Professor Norton may ho right and ills theory is certainly logical, but It ia possible that an otl'set may also ex ist which, although tho quantity of sold put out by tho mines Is very Kroa,t, yet money may bo scarco and may acquire new power. It Is unde wiahly true that tho world's volumo f business has increased since 1907 many tlniei faster than tlie output of oU. .Millions of people, whoso an cestors were too ignorant or too Trtiwh better trained and in such hot ter circumstances than their foro heiws that their exchanges requlro aiillllons more money. Railroads and tfttaninhips have brought tho cliff or ent ports of tho world so closely to Kother that commerco has multiplied lis (Iciunutls many times. Hut tho 'pressing needs of all mankind are so jjreat that vast sums of money nro (demanded. Th.o Panama Canal is only ono instance. Famino stricken melons In Ilusula, India and China tniiHl be irrigated to save tho lives of millions. Vast amounts of money wra noeded for this. Two hundred avnil llfty million Hindus need to havo itlm aid of money and would furnish jKreat rowaids to investors. Four Imndrod million Chlnneso are waking iuti, to modem business methods and tnutil havo factories, railroads, and s1I tlio equipment of a modern com sriorcial nation. All Huropo and all America nro needing an extension of Ittelr convenience, and tho railroads auid steamship lines nro not equal to Xllo needs of mankind. For all this Aliero Is not money enough and whon Alio panic camo it found tho United filnles In the condition of tho man -who had millions of property, and millions of dollars' worth of ordors on hand, but had to go Into tho hands .r.u receiver and ceaso business be .nime 'io could not get money enough 1 do business. Awet currency may ol ! tho best kind and may ho a llUlo In tho line of prhilogo, but In vlrw of tho immedlnto needs of tho Muntiy and the splendid condition nln I In to do business, if bIio can &it tho money, It Is much to bo laopod Hint sumo such meastiro as Uiat proposed in Congross will bo "otiartrd. Augusta Stephan. o It hns been found that whon you attempt to mako some Coos Day men eat their words, they would rather light than eat. There are some Coos Bay men who try to carry at ono time r load that would look better if taken in two trips. Some Coos Bay peoplo who turned over a now leaf this year havo found that It blew back before tho year had grown very old. PORT ORKORD POINTERS. A North Bend girl drew herself up haughtily as sho said "you had no business to kiss me." "But," j tho Marshfleld young man said, "it wasn't business, It was pleasure." It was a llttlo Coos Day boy who, whon called to get washed, said: "What's the matter, haint nobody got notliiu' olbo to do?" -- Tlio Xew Year. Port Orford has a mammoth wood pile on tho beach at Battleroclr, brought there and piled up by the big surf. Dr. White and his nephew, an at torney, both old Oregonians, but now of Chicago, went down the coast Fri day looking after investments in real estate. They were accompanied by another gentleman and they consti tuted a jovial trio. Nat Dean is carrying tho mail from Langlois past Haro to where he meets the Myrtle Point carrier, while Gene Strain drives from Port Orford to Langlois. Tho boys get though, but they have had a strenuous time doing so. Miss Calla Chandler began a term of School Monday in tho Elk river district. A house at Adolphsen's mill has been fitted up for school during tho winter months, as it accommo dates a larger number of children' at that placo than whero the school house is located further up the river. Rev. Geo. II. Roach was unable to come down and hold his regnlar ser vices at Port Orford last Sunday be cause of the Illness of his wife. There were more agates on tho beach Sunday than at any time this winter, and the day being warm and sunny many people wero out and some fine agates wero collected. Port Orford challenges jany other point on the coast to produce such a quantity and quality of gems, both as to value and variety as are found on Agato Beach. . iliMi A little daughter aged 11 months of F. Cook's, who resides In Port Orford, died of whooping cough last Wednesday morning and was laid to rest In tho cemetery hero on Thurs day, Dr. Glanvlllc conducting tho funeral services. The bereaved fam ily have the sympathy of tho entire community. So far January has been remarka bly warm, with grass growing all along the coast. Not a snow flaUs hns yet fnllon in Port Orford and as thcro Is no snow in tho mountains to speak of, wo may reasonably expect good weather and an early spring. A couple of gentlemen came in from Portland last week, bought a lot of grub, and next morning went up Hubbard's creek whero they camped a couplo of days, and camo back and loft for Portland again without revealing their mission. But wo supposo it was to got tho final piece of red tape to tio around the Byer's survey to complete its approval. Office over Flanagan & Bennett Bank. Marshfleld, Orecoi G. F.
