The item appearing in Tho Times yesterday about Nort on & Hansen engaging in the flour and feed business was an error. Tho firm that should bo named was Thompson & Hanson. Norton & Hansen will continue dealing In food for the intellect Instead of for animals. Resent North Bend's Boast Sev eral local citizens have taken excep tion to the remarks of North Bend cltizons that they have the only "city duck pond" on tho bay. They are confident that Marshfleld has deeper i and wider city ponds than tho neigh boring city, and they resent tho im putation of North Bend citizens that they hold the candle. Will Frame Picture It is reported that the city council of North Bend has had pictures taken of the mud ponds recently shown In the city streets, and that these pictures will bo framed and placed in the city hall for future reference, when tho pres ent council shall have "reformed" the streets so that the rain will be unable to make mud. Will Move Into New Quarters TIiq German-American Hospital asso ciation headquarters, which have been located in the building above Lockhart's drug store, will bo moved ' in a few days into the lower floor of the Owehs' building just below tho Presbyterian church, where It will be, In ckarge of Local Manager Ray m6nd, who has been connected with It for over a month. Victor Is Fast Boat. The 35 foot man for Victor Whittick, of North ! Bond, has been completed for several days and has been given several trin' ! runs, which indicate that the boat has considerable speed even with a 16 horse power engine. Tho boat Is shaped somewhate llko a steam tug and presents an excellent appearance In tho water, her name being Victor. Interest Is Growing Much inter oat Is being shown in tho Union Evan gelistic services which have been hold at tho Presbyterian church every night this week, Rov. Thurston ! preaching each evening during tho Illness of Rov. Browne. Interest Is ! growing at each service and six con versions 4iavo been made In tho past few days. The services will be con tinued next week and everybody Is given a hearty Invitation to attend. number Goes Bankrupts Ira E. Wheeler, a plumber of North Bond, has gono Into bankruptcy and at a meeting of the creditors on January 21, C. Jay Mahoney, of Marshfleld, was elected trustee of tho concern. The liabilities of tho firm were $1500 while the assets amounted to half that sum, the creditors being princi pally Portland Arms. Mr. Mahoney ) went over to North Bend this after noon to appraise tho stock and tako an inventory. Arrives From tho Valley Young's Musical Comedy "company arrived from a trip down tho Coquille valley on the noon train today after playing to crowded houses at every perform ance In Bandon and Coquille. Tho company will play here three nights and will leave on tho Plant for San Francisco, where they will opon up a two months' tour of tho stato. Man ager Dalley left for tho Gato City on tho last steamer to bill tho produc tion In various cities of California. Dog Taxes Coming Rapidly. Mar shal Jack Carter has collected dog taxes for tho prosent year to tho amount of $187.50, and tho dogs without tags appear to bo almost as thick as over. Not a slnglo arrost has boon made for non-paymont of tho dog tax thus far, but two dogs with apparently no ownors havo heon killed. Tho marshal assorts that qulto a number of dogs will be klllod In a few days unless tho ownors como forward and havo tags placed upon thom. They Stuck in tho Mud Tho Blanco hotel bus, In chargo of that well known driver, "Buckshot," stuck in tho mud opposite Georgo Goodrum's store today at noon, and ' about half a dozen passengers were compelled to pllo out in tho deep mud and wade to the sidewalk. Tho road has become soft where tho gas i pipes of the Coos Bay Gas & Electric i company has been laid recently, and the right hind wheel of tho vehicle became fast in the mire, tho passen gers all having to move before tho rig could bo started. Why the Gulls Are Tame. Tho seagulls on the bay are given a daily meal by the employes of the various factories and mills along tho water front In Coos Bay. When the weather ' is fine tho employes who do not re turn home for ,the noon meal eat their lunch at tho water's edge, sit-! ting on tho wharves. The gulls como from all directions having learned to know when the hour of noon ap proaches. The men give the gulls crumbs and scraps left from lunch and tho birds have become marvel ously tame In their efforts to secure tho food. Says Meat Goes to Rosehnrg.- Marslifleld is said to bo up against : a meat famine and somo beef is be- ing shipped in from Portland to j supply tho demand. The Times rec-1 ommends fish as a substitute and tho fact that clams are selling as high as a $1 a bucket indicates that fish and clams aro In demand. It might be a good plan for cattlo buy ers from the bay to get out among tho stockmen earlier in the season. Hundreds of heads of fine beef cat tle are driven out to Rosoburg each season that might bo kept on hand to supply Coos county's requirements under .proper ..conditions. Myrtle Point Enterprise. Citizens Take Tilings i3asy. Stories aro. told of the Englishmen managing to attend to their busi ness and taking life pretty easy at tho same time. Tho nervous energy of tho American Is also a historic topic. But a visit to three out of every five offices of professional and business men In Marshfleld will de velop tho fact that some Marshfleld citizens take life pretty easy. Nu merous offices in the city aro un opened at 10 o'clock in the morning, and they also close quite early. Yet there Is as much business accom plished as though tho men who have officqs were wracking their nervos with long hours and energetic work. Work Being Rushed Construction on the foundations of the Finnish Temple being erected west of the Masonic Temple is progressing rapld iv Binpo tim work started over a week 'ago. Quite a large force of men aro 'at work on the structuro and tho (greatest interest Is being shown in jtho erection of this bnilding which will bo the homo of tho Fnnish so icieties of Marshfleld. It will be a very handsome home for them when completed, which is oxpected to bo within tho next two months. Quito a few of the members of the society have contributed several days' work on tho building, which will un doubtedly be well built becauso of tho interest each man will havo In tho structure. Sculptural Art Exhiblt-Tlio latest addition to tho chamber of commerce exhibit Is a line miniature stone font executed by J. Y. Arnot, of this city. It Is chiselled from the natlvo sand stone of the county, a slate color, which shows up well In such work. Tho font represents tho American eagle with wings half spread, tho bird standing on tho ground. In front thoro is a small rcceptaclo and another on tho right side, somowhat similar to drinking fonts at a pub lie fountain. Tho work is protty good and Is causing considerable In terest among visitors to tho chamber of commerce Tho exhibit goes to show that this is another uso to ! which tho Innumerable resources of Coos county may be applied. Astounding Gullibility. Local citizens aro still wondering over the oxtremo gullibility of San Francisco and Portland people who took about a quarter million of stock In tho air ship company which was to run a lino of airships between Portland and San Francisco. Tho advertisement of tho company in tho Portland pa pors amused tho people hero as a baro-faced fako, and tho Times own had tho temerity to say something supposed to bo funny ovor tho drop ping of tho mallbags In tho city as jtho airship passed ovor. That any jbody would tako stock In such a prop loclUon, which did not ovon ontor Into tho St Louis airship contogts, was I never considered by Marshfleld c'.tl 'mis, who oxporioncod with somo 1 thing of a shock tho nows that two largo cities had boon buncoed by such brazen mothods as tlioso discount r )rm tt t peoplo from a quarter mlUio-i d-.lln:e In "hnrd times." SHFIELD IS WELL IN FRONT Daughter of Citizen Gains Mu sical Honors in Big East ern College. The fa mo of Coos Bay continues to spread in a manner which cannot help but draw the attention of Ullo people of the United States to ttfls famous seaport and its prospects a$ n, future great city. A Marshfleld gh'l has gained famo In Cornell Univer sity, in New York stato, recently and thereby helped to spread tho CO03 Bay gospel. Tho young lady Is Miss Mabel Millis, daughter of C. J. MiUls, vice president and general manager of tho C. B. R. & E. R. R. & N. Co., of Marshfleld. Miss Millis took part In tho pro gram given recently by the advanood students In a recital at tho Ithaca Conservatory of Music and was high ly complimented as tho best singer Ot tho recital. She has a splendid oon. tralto voice and spent throe yearo In Portland studying under Mrs. Walter Reid. Sho is at Cornell rounding out her musical studies and lias drawn considerable attention from musical experts of that plaoe. Qn tho program of tho recital with tho names of other participants from tho large cities of tho country, Miss Minis gave her homo as Marshfleld, whoa she will come next spring. Scotsmen of Coos Bay Will Honor Memory of Famous Poetic Genius. Extensive preparations aro unuV5r way for tho big celebration to bo hold on tho 149 th anniversary of tho birth of "Bobbie" Burns, tho famous Scotch poet of memory beloved by Scotchmen tho whole world over. Scots, sons, grandions, wires, flfet ers and sweethearts will assomblo n Redmen's hall next Saturday nlftht from all over this district. Thoao will bo an excellent program closing with a banquet. A meeting of nu merous Scots was held last Saturflfay night and all arrangements for Wjo celebration were made, tho following committee being appointed: Bbcbj tary Hugh Sneddon, Peter Scot, tfc,. and Edward Mltchol. It is a favorlto thomo Oman's Scotchmen what Scotland would havo been today If Robert Burns had not been born; and tho thomo Is fiotafd-. times amplified to what tho world would have been but for his ndvaufc among tho sons of men. In tho built in or box bed in tho kitchen o a modest Scotland home on January 25, 1759, Robert Burns, one of tho. greatest geniuses of any ago dp country first saw light, and about tho dwelling ho lived the first Betwn uneventful years of his llfo In Ayr shire which ho lator mado famoai. Real Estate Talk Is Lively During tho past week real ostato on 1Coo3 Bay has begun to pick up considera bly. Tho principal subject of con versation on tho streets tills wcok hns been real estate, and tho prospects for a good year were never brighter. Tho talk of "panic" and "hard times" has had no effect whatovor on prices ami local real estate raon Insist that noth ing will havo any effect oji Coos Boy property except to ralso Its valnc. It Is contended that tho long delayed growth of this section had only com menced when tho "bubble" in other parts of tho country fell flat. It Is said that oven In hard times tho growth of this section would bo away beyond its present stato, and conse quently money conditions will havo no effect hero. It Is certain that Ut Ing Is as high as over, and tho price of lots Is rather astonishing to many nowcomors. Every Indication points to a good year In real ostato becauso so many out stdo Investors are pour ing into tho county oh prospecting trips. Whllo wo don't get our fat stoors from Portland wo do havo thom raised In Coos county and slaughtered by union skilled labor at homo. By this method we keep our money at homo.
